iTunes - Image 1 Is iTunes killing full album sales? That's what a few recording artists think so, as although online music sales continue to rise, overall album sales as well as CD sales in general have steadily dwindled. They're pointing to the now-popular method of freely choosing what particular songs to buy from an album as the reason.

Steve Jobs: Apple iTunes Plus gets more songs, U.S. price drop - Image 1Following Steve Jobs' announcement of an iTunes song price cut on The Wall Street Journal Online, Apple has dropped the price of all iTunes Plus songs (those without any digital rights management) from US$ 1.29 to US$ 0.99 for U.S customers. It was also announced that Apple will be beefing up their selection of songs by adding more independent music labels to iTunes Plus.

While Jobs didn't explain why Apple is dropping iTunes Plus songs' prices, rumor has it that this price drop and the addition of new indie labels is Apple's response to Amazon's DRM free music download store.

This move could further solidify iTunes' reputation as the 3rd largest music retailer in the U.S. We'll have to wait and see if Steve Jobs' current actions will generate more consumer interest.

go pick on someone your own size - Image 1"They won't advertise your album unless you give them extra material" Lily Allen says of Apple, the computer company behind iTunes. Apparently, Apple has pushed the outspoken British pop singer to quickly produce a new version of her song for sale on iTunes. The musician responsible for the hit single Smile wont' let the Silicon Valley giant get away with it - she now plans to give Apple a "rubbish remix".

Record labels pay for good in-store placement of albums, a practice which Apple shuns. Instead, Apple wants to enable unbiased music recommendations. In order to gain visibility on the front page of iTunes, labels must negotiate with Apple. Apple offers good iTunes placement to artists who offer exclusive material.

But such good placement, as offered by Apple, is the key. We heard from Wall Street Journal that during a week when an album is featured on the iTunes home page, it can sell about five times more copies than its average sales when that album is not featured. Torn between two figures we really like: Apple and Lily Allen, we wonder whose side of the story holds more weight.

iPhone - Image 1So all the speculations have long been over. iPhone has been revealed, unveiled, whatever term you may want to use. It would be remembered that Steve Jobs himself highlighted its rather amazing features at this year's Macworld Conference and Expo.

So you think you know everything about the product? Well, think again. Wall Street Journal is now reporting that Apple, most especially the outspoken CEO, forced Cingular to relinquish control of the development process therefore winning many concessions from the biggest mobile phone carrier in the U.S.

The influential newspaper added as well that one of these concessions includes a portion of the monthly revenues from subscribers. Furthermore, Wall Street Journal mentioned as well that Cingular agreed to not put its logo on the phone.

Not only that, it was also reported that the carrier abandoned its whim for the phone to carry its software for Web Surfing as well as for ringtones and other services. The publication continued,

Top Cingular executives were willing to cede control to Mr. Jobs and tolerate his digs at cellphone carriers, all for the privilege of being the exclusive U.S. provider of one of the most highly anticipated consumer electronics devices in years -- and to deny rivals a chance to do the same.

It seems that doing business with Jobs has its price. There's a big chance that the iPhone is going to be a multi-million hit once it comes out - and Cingular is probably banking on this to happen.

MSNBC and the Wall Street Journal report that Apple is in talks with major labels to license music videos for sale through the iTunes Music Store:

Apple has approached the four major music companies, Warner Music Group Corp., EMI Group PLC, Vivendi Universal SA's Universal Music Group and Sony BMG, a joint venture between Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann AG, to license music videos for sale through iTunes, according to people in the media industry. The videos, which could go on sale as early as September, would likely be sold for $1.99 each, with the possibility of a discount if consumers buy a music video and a song at the same time.
What's more, a followup story at the Wall Street Journal suggests that Apple may have more than music videos in mind for its video iPod:
Steve Jobs has spoken with Disney President and soon-to-be CEO Bob Iger about ways to license various Disney content for a video iPod, according to an internal Disney email I have obtained. That could include anything from clips from ESPN and ABC News to short cartoons.
...and that the new unit won't be without...particular competition:
If the past is any measure of what?s to come, Jobs will enter the arena late (as he did with the iPod) only to leapfrog over the competition with some entirely different device. And that could leave everyone from Microsoft?s Bill Gates to Sony?s Howard Stringer once again racing to copy their far smaller rival.
The buzz surrounding the family member that will take the iPod to the next generation has never been at such a fevered pitch. With rumors of music videos being sold through the iTunes Music Store as early as September, could a video iPod be just weeks away?
