Apple - Image 1In the Business section of Times Online, it was reported that Apple has given warning that it could be removed from the highly-regarded NASDAQ Global Select Market, as the Cupertino-based company acknowledged for the first time that it was the subject of a federal investigation into its stock option practices.

According to the Times, Apple said that the investigation by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) could lead to further restatements and delays to its financial reporting. The company revealed "irregularities" last June in its stock option grants and took an US$ 84 million (£43 million) charge six months later.

The company also noted that the investigation could "subject the company to a potential delisting from the NASDAQ Global Select Market". This could cause a decrease in the level of confidence investors have in Apple as well as a loss of respectability.

WozniakApple co-founder Steve Wozniak may not be as visible as Steve Jobs, but when the "other Steve" talks, he sure gets our attention.

The Times Online got Wozniak talking about money, taxes, and why he carries US$ 20,000 cash in his pocket (no typo there, the zeroes are in the right places). While that's one brow-raising statement, we can't blame him for carrying so much moolah because he needs to get his gadget fix. Yes, folks, the 56-year old multi-millionaire is still gadget-crazy, with a certain fixation to Segway scooters, environment-friendly hybrid cars, and plasma televisions. With such high-end toy addiction, it becomes understandable why Woz carries around that much money. That's on top of the credit cards that he use "quite a lot now". It's not hard to tell that Woz is a huge spender, eh?

The Times tried to dig up some financial info from Woz, but unfortunately, he's not quite certain about the status of his investments or how much he earns. He leaves it up to his accountant and broker. But he did say, "IÂ?m an engineer, not a money person, but I do remember using some of the proceeds from selling my Apple stock to buy a house in Scots Valley, California."

It's quite interesting to know that a person of his stature really doesn't keep track of his investments. Perhaps that makes his proposed change in US tax system seem a little bit strange and would make economists cringe: "I would like to see all assets taxed instead, although I think it would save everyone a lot of time and energy if the government just deflated the economy by 1 per cent a year by printing more money. That will never happen, though."

But it's easy to lose track of investments and all "unimportant" tax and government issues when you're just happy with your life, right? That seems to be the case for Woz.

TM 001Do you have yourself a Wacom tablet that you simply couldn't let go of? May it be for sentimental reasons or the sheer value it would have over time if you sell it over eBay as a relic of technologies past? Do not despair. TabletMagic is here to keep your Wacom tablet up with the times.

It is an open source project to update serial-based Wacom tablets released before the Mac OS X. This freeware application, hopes to bring full support to Mac OS X for all serial tablets left in the dumps by Wacom. Currently, it supports serial tablets with model numbers SD, UD, KT, CT, and PL.

TabletMagic will soon have more complete SD tablet support. Intuos (GD) support is in development.

Changelog:
  • Fixed a bug in which the pointer was limited to the top-left screen quadrant
  • Ports are now scanned at 9600 and 19200 baud
  • Improved compatibility with 10.2 (Jaguar-specific build available)
  • Now says "Daemon Not Running" when the driver is not loaded
  • Pressure on/off commands no longer confuse the daemon
  • Added support for the SD420L (and other older-model SD tablets)
  • Added a "Panic Button" to recover from testing hang-ups
