Flip4MacFlip4Mac WMV, the collection of QuickTime components that allow Mac users to play, import, and export Windows Media files, has just been upgraded to Beta v2.1.0.29. New in the latest release are:
  • Universal binary support for Intel Macs
  • Playback optimizations for Intel Macs
  • Significant export optimizations for PowerPC Macs
  • Multi language audio support in player
  • Overlay when importing WMV content in trial mode
  • Support for web authors to disable "save as" feature in embedded stream
A few improvements and fixes were also squeezed into v2.1.0.29. Support for MMS servers and live streams is one of those improved for this new version. Fixes include DCT blocking issue (progressive deterioration with increasing distance from previous keyframe) and encode errors when the audio bit rate is set higher than the video bit rate.

Since this is not yet the final release, there are still some things that are yet to see its inclusion in the Flip4Mac app. Among them are the updated user guide and the fix for 2-pass VBR green shift issue.

If this app strikes your fancy, feel free to download it below (it's compatible with mac Intel and Power PC OS X v10.3.9, 10.4 or later and QuickTime v6.5, 7.0 or later). After test driving it, help make the final issue better by filling up the feedback form here.

Brave DwarvesExclusive Games LLC and GameOver-Games are proud to announce the release of Brave Dwarves - Back for Treasure Macintosh Edition 1.01, an adventure arcade, the Windows version of which has already become a real hit among arcade fans of all ages.

Join in the action by helping the brave dwarves defeat the Evil out of their beautiful caves and stop the end of the world while you're at it. Stopping Evil won't be an easy task. You'd have to forever seal the Gate by collecting hundreds of gems and locking it out.

A new character mode allows you to be either an axe-wielding warrior or a powerful Wizard. There are a hundred levels to conquer so getting bored is out of the question. At each level you'd be required to find 3 keys to get you to the next level. Battles will get tough and then tougher as you progress, so make sure to grab Power Orbs to increase the power that you have ten folds.

It runs under Mac OS X 10.3.9 up to 10.4 (for Power PC based Macs) and will cost around $19.95 USD.

Xserve

Intel is planning to deliver Woodcrest (the code-named successor to its Xeon server processor) this month, and sources at Apple confirm a July release the first Intel-based Xserve.

In the meantime, Apple's Power Mac systems are making the transition to Intel processors with the Core 2 Duo which has been code-named Conroe.  Intel is planning to make these processors available in July as well. Industry scuttlebutt has it that new pro systems will come out in conjunction with Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference, which takes place in early August.

If Apple follows through, it would not be the first time its Xserve has outdone the Power Mac performance-wise.  Apple started started shipping Xserve units with 2.3GHz Power PC G5 processors on the sly when the Power Mac still topped out at 2GHz.

On a related topic, Intel sources report that Merom, the laptop-friendly version of the Core 2 Duo, is still planned for an August release. A new MacBook Pro may arrive soon afterwards, depending on when Apple to install the new chip in its products.
