Apple homebrew done easy: Jiggy your own iPhone apps - Image 1Jiggy is more than just five letter word with a jelly groove to it. Apparently it's also the name of a new application authoring suite for the Apple iPhone, and it could make some serious waves in the Apple homebrew community. And maybe after that little dance party you're throwing to get the mood swinging, you can hop over to the full story for the lowdown on PsyKoh LLC's offering for the budding Apple homebrew developer.

NES.app v0.41: another NES emulator for the iPhone - Image 1To those of you who were delighted that the homebrew community has fully cracked the iPhone open, here's an interesting development: another group of developers came up with a new program known as NES.app that is similar to iPhoneNES.

It seems like this is somewhat a "follow through" because the first parts of both the programs' changelog are similar. Anyway, NES.app uses the InfoNES emulation core so it reflects the 6502 processor in a Nintendo Entertainment System.

It allows users to play ROM dumps of games designed for the NES. NES.app is currently on v0.41 and the changes since iPhoneNES v.20 are as follows:
  • 0.22:[stepwhite] Added diagonal direction hotspots, SHOW_HITSPOT flags
  • 0.23:[nervegas] Tweaks to orientation change, DEBUG shows hot spots now
  • 0.24:
    • [nervegas] Using K6502_rw.h from older core, Metroid and Punchout work!
    • [nervegas] Made more improvements to orientation sensitivity
    • [nervegas] Implemented slightly faster rendering
  • 0.25: [nervegas] Enlarged controls for landscape mode
  • 0.26: [nervegas] Change status bar background to black on landscape
  • 0.27: [nervegas] Controller fix to allow button, then directional pad hold
  • 0.28: [nervegas] Added save SRAM support (to save SRAM for games like Zelda)
  • 0.29: [nervegas] Added auto-save state and "Saved Games" selection
  • 0.30: [nervegas] Fixed SaveState for many games, +Mapper1 +Mapper5. This fixed Tetris, Bubble Bobble, Super Mario 2, others...
The rest of the changelog and the download link after the jump!

Apple and the PSP

We really don't want to start a flame war, but offending comments like this is just too news-y to pass up. Time has a report on the launch of the Apple's iPhone, and within that lengthy report is this paragraph:

To witness the iPhone launch from behind the curtain (or under the towel) is to see the controlling hand of Steve Jobs, for whom this is an almost mystically significant year. He's 50 years old. It's been 30 years since he founded Apple (with Stephen Wozniak), and 10 since he returned there after having been fired. In that decade Apple's stock has gone up 1,000%. Neither age nor success (nor cancer surgery in 2004) have significantly mellowed him, though some of the silver in his beard is creeping into his hair. All technologists believe their products are better than other people's, or at least they say they do, but Jobs believes it a little more than most. In the hours we spent talking about the iPhone, Jobs trash-talked the Treo, the BlackJack, the Sony PSP and the Sony Mylo ("just garbage compared to this"), Windows Vista ("It's just a copy of an old version of Mac OSX") and of course MicrosoftÂ?s would-be iPod killer, Zune.

The iPhoneThe PSP and the Sony Mylo, garbage compared to the iPhone? To be fair, the Mylo might, and we stress, might, deserve a comparison with the iPhone since they're both in the same category of tech products. But to compare the iPhone to the PSP? Really now.

What? Are there supposed to be games of PS1 or higher quality set to be released for the iPhone? Will it be rigged to play DS games?

The iPhone is a very pretty and very savvy multi-functional handheld device that can be used as a phone. (Yes, we want one ourselves.) The PSP is a very pretty and very savvy multi-functional handheld device that can be used (or is primarily used) to play games, or given the homebrew community, used for a whole lot of things.

Garbage? Someone's being a bit too hasty, or a bit too boastful.

iPod HomebrewHomebrew games are user-programmed and home-developed games produced by consumers on video game platforms that are not typically user-programmable. There's a whole slew of homebrew coders and developers for platforms such as the Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS, and now it seems like the homebrew community is extending its hardware borders to include the Apple iPod.

There is now a project being undergone by a few resourceful coders that means to document any reverse engineering of the iPod game packages (.ipgs) that function with the Apple written iPod OS. The project's ultimate goal is to enable people to make their own games for the iPod.

This is very good news for iPod consumers who want to have more and more games available to them, although the budding iPod homebrew scene may be risking the wrath of Apple. The people behind the iPod homebrew project are very up-front about their goal, though. They're not out to crack and pirate existing iPod games, they're just trying to give coders and consumers more choices when it comes to gaming.

We'll keep an eye out on this very interesting project, and we'll definitely post updates about it as soon as they surface.
