If you're still not satisfied with the amount of rhythm games out there for the Wii and you're just interested in a little freestyle jamming, then some students from the University of Potsdam in Germany have just the thing for you. Using a Wii controller and the Nunchuk attachment, they've created a program which simulates playing a drum set complete with an adjustable system included to it.

The program makes use of the Bluetooth wireless system to connect to the Mac and transmits the motions taken from the Wiimote into sound. It even uses the accelerometer to measure how hard you're beating your virtual drumsticks and reflects the loudness or harshness of the sound. In fact, if you take a look at the video below, you'll notice there's no delay with the hitting of the "drums" and the sound they make.

What's more is that the program itself is free! This open source creation is easily downloadable at their website at ScreenFashion and can easily be tweaked using customizable MIDI settings for those who want to experiment with their own creations. So until Nintendo decides to release their own drum simulator, you can access the site through the read link below for those interested in downloading this freestyle drumbeating rhythm simulator.

iPhone - Image 1iPhone owners may have noticed something peculiar after they updated their iPhone software, which could be a good side-effect brought about by iPhone firmware update 1.1.1: a bug lets the iPhone stream music wirelessly to Bluetooth headsets, after accessing Visual Voicemail.

Now the question is: is this a good thing, or a bad thing? If it's good, can we call this a "feature" instead of a "bug"?

The bug is activated whenever someone enters the Visual Voicemail application, and then touch the Audio button at the upper right-hand corner of the iPhone's screen. An option to "Change Audio Source" pops up, and there are the three choices, one of which is "iPhone Bluetooth Headset".

For some reason, the Bluetooth Headset connection will not be disconnected even after the user exits the Visual Voicemail interface, and streams every sound to the Bluetooth Headset, including clicks as well as MP3 tracks played on the iPhone.

All in all, it's a pretty nifty option for those who prefer to use their wireless headsets...that is, if Apple decides not to fix the accidental feature.

Malware attacks on iPhone and others inevitable, says expert - Image 1Consumers' eyes and attention are keenly fixed on how to crack open the eye-candy iPhone ever since Apple launched it this year. And to tell you the truth, a lot of homebrew applications have been appearing lately showcasing the mobile phone's flexibility and functionality.

Experts, however, warn consumers that this may lead to complex mobile attacks in the future much like the problems PC users are facing right now. Anti-virus Research Director Mikko Hypponen from computer security service provider F-Secure had this to say:

The amount of hype around the iPhone is pretty unbelievable, so it's a given that people will continue to play around with it and find ways around the security features of the phone. It's quite likely that we'll see iPhone malware sooner or later.

The director further explained that despite having a Bluetooth function, the anticipated malware are expected to spread through email because iPhone doesn't use the chip for file transmission. He added that other smart phones based on the OS Symbian have a lot to worry in the future. Hypponen added:

We've seen a little over 370 different examples of malware running on smart phone platforms. Almost all of them target Symbian-based phones, because Symbian is by far the market leader, with over half the smart phones in the world running that operating system.

Enabling the Apple iPhone to stream music to a bluetooth headset - Image 1The Apple iPhone doesn't support A2DP, which allows users to transmit stereo audio to Bluetooth headphones. However, Earle Davies, a reader from tuaw.com has found a way to make it work... to a certain degree.

We say to a certain degree because while you can get the music and sound to stream to the headset, the iPhone still plays audio though its built-in speakers at the same time.

If you still want to try it, switch on the headset and wait for your iPhone to recognize it. Once it does, go into the Visual Voicemail screen and tap the Audio button in the upper right.

You'll receive an audio selection dialog that lets you choose where to send the iPhone's audio. Select the Headset option, switch over to the iPod, play some music or a video and there you have it. Your iPhone is now streaming music to the headset.

Hopefully, Apple will develop its own A2DP bluetooth headset that will allow users to listen to their music on a headset. Until then, we'll probably be stuck with workarounds like this unless some enterprising coder can work out a way for us to do this much more easily.
