Zune 2 is CNET' most wanted for week ending October 28 - Image 1CNET has just released the poll results for their top 20 most wanted products for the week ending October 28. And from the looks of it, Microsoft's getting a pick-me-up as their upcoming Zune 2 media player pulls ahead of the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3 to first place. From an ugly duckling to a swan, indeed.

Getting into specifics, the Zune 2.0 player (available only in black) will carry a new iPod-style Zune pad, a 3.2-inch screen, and a set of downloadable features that are expected to be available come this fall. And while Sony has already made plans to phase out their 60 GB PlayStation 3 by the end of this year, the polls indicate that it's still on shoppers' wish lists at third place.

Other notables we spied in the list were the Apple iPhone, which got fifth place, and the recently released black PSP Slim, which was at eleventh place.

Shoot the Zune - Image 1If you're looking for some games to play on your iPhone, Jason Merchant has a couple of interesting ones up for download. If you like fish and you've got issues with Microsoft's Zune, you'll love these.

Aquarium v1 is a simple application where you can watch fish swim around, then feed them if you wish to do so. It's actually very relaxing to do this, and will probably kill a minute or two when you're stuck in traffic.

A more heart-pumping application is the Shoot the Zune wherein you play the role of the iPhone and launch missiles at hapless Zune MP3 players across the screen.

Please be reminded that you'll have to Jailbreak your iPhone first before these can be installed. They're written in objective C. Tweaks have been made from previous versions of the apps.

the iPhone - Image 1An iPhone without the Phone? Media Loper believes that this may be exactly what the new generation in iPods will be.

Here are some things they think would be included in the new generation of iPod:
  • Big screen with auto adjustment - Here's the "true video iPod" for you. Big screen with automatic orientation adjustments. You can't expect the next video iPod to come out without this feature, it just wouldn't be right to call it a video iPod when you put it beside an iPhone.
  • Touch screen interface - Well with a big screen where would the controls go? And if it has a touch screen, why not have all the things the iPhone has as well? It'd also be advantageous for Apple to have one common interface for their products. It'll make making decisions easier since you don't have to worry about familiarizing yourself with an unfamiliar interface.
  • An iPDA? - Well why not? The iPhone is basically a tiny Mac. Why not integrate it into a new iPod / PDA hybrid.
  • WiFi - If Microsoft comes out with a new gen Zune complete with WiFi, this would certainly be a kick in the balls profits for a new gen iPod. They can't afford not to put it in.
Theorists also believe that the next gen iPod might not be in the works, since it would compete with the iPhone. Apple would be stealing from its own cookie jar. But Steve Jobs answered this by saying that if there's going to be cannibalization of Apple, it might as well be by Apple. Imagine an apple biting itself and you'll see where that goes.

Watch out for official updates when we get them.

Hide-a-Pod - Image 1

Seems like a lot of people are having quite a riot over this rather ingenious anti-theft accessory. And we at QJ also think that humorous posts make for good leisurely reading in the weekend, especially after a torrential luge of E3 news. But moving on...

The Anti-Social has released an accessory that could prevent your precious iPod from getting stolen. And what better way to deter thieves than by showing them that all you've got... is a Zune. Hence, the Hide-a-Pod was born. It acts as a case to store your iPod, the case here being a mock-Zune skin.

We've linked the product page below via our Read link, and through there, you can check out the many features that the Hide-a-Pod has. There's an FAQ section as well, explaining other details regarding compatibility, custom colors, and whatnot. For example: "Can I choose my Zune color? Sorry, no. We only use brown Zunes for the maximum anti-theft protection." They've even extended the accessory to have an iPhone counterpart. You wouldn't want it to be stolen now, would you?

Now here's the catch. People should learn to read the fine print too, y'know. At the bottom of the website is a little caveat:

iPod and iPhone are trademarks of Apple and Zune is a trademark of Microsoft. We are are not associated with them in any way. This is all just a big gag and you couldn't order a Hide-a-Pod if you wanted to. So there.

Aaaw. It was fun while it lasted. If you check out the page, it's riddled with a lot of humor as well. A dash of wit, a pinch of LOL, and a healthy dose of Easter Egg giggles. But for those who aren't Apple fanboys, look on the bright side. "Imitation is the best form of flattery." Or maybe it's just... Oh. Snap.

iPod amnesty bin - Image 1

Sometimes messages need to be sent to the other camp to trigger some kind of response or to psyche out the opposition. Microsoft's Zune people earlier released an image of their "iPod Amnesty Bin" and had it find its way to Flickr. The weird picture drew bemused reactions from readers there.

Message sent, though no body's quite sure if it means anything at all. The only thing we all can be sure of is that the boys in green probably spent a bundle on those iPods. Either that or they already own iPods and placed them in the bin as props or something.

We're really not sure what to make of all this, especially the "bite me" message. It's just plain weird when you consider that professionals are behind this. Help us figure out the mysteries by posting your comments.

Zune - Image 1Earlier in the week, we reported a deal between EMI and Apple regarding selling Digital Rights Management (DRM)-free content which has pleased digital music fans around the world. In a move to react with the status quo, Microsoft has followed by announcing that it, too, will do the same for the Zune community.

In a statement by Katy Asher, a spokeswoman for Microsoft, it was revealed that the company has also been holding talks with record outfits in an attempt to cut the consumers some slack.

It can be remembered that there has been an outcry both in the U.S. and in Europe against DRM because the policy essentially restricts compatibility and transferability of content in an attempt to curb piracy of copyrighted material. Apple and Microsoft has embedded DRM code in their media formats, making consumers clamor for a more flexible policy.

"We plan on offering it (DRM-free content) to them as soon as our label partners are comfortable with it," says Asher. She said that Microsoft has recognized what the people want and is working on giving them what they desire.

Analysts suggest that the move by Microsoft is based on Apple's policy because of the influence that the iPod line of players have over the community. We'll keep you posted as the situation brews in the ranks of the Zune team.

weird but useful - Image 1The i.Sound MovieTime Universal solves the most common problem for the gadget-trendy entertainment fan - which one to use. The dock makes listening universal for the most popular players around like the iPod, Zune and the PSP, and has these features to boot:
  • Surround sound feature
  • Compact
  • Four 32 mm speakers
  • Total Power: 12 Watts RMS
  • Frequency response: 180 Hz with 20 Khz
  • Buttons: go/stop, volume, surround
  • Auxiliary audio Entry + audio cable mini jack for the connection with your other audio devices.
One thing about this multi-functional gadget is that the appearance is unlike any other we've seen so far. At 77 bucks a pop, it's certainly worth the consideration, but style-conscious users may want to give it a second thought.
