Power Mac G4 Leopard - Image 1One of the selling points of Apple's new Leopard is that it can work on older machines, and that Mac fans who are holding on to their legacy Power Macs can have a reason to rejoice once the Leopard OS gets released into the market. However, can Leopard really live up to its promise and run on an 8-year-old Power Mac G4 with AGP Graphics? Engadget tried to install the newest iteration of the OS X, and here's the verdict.

To cut the long story short, Leopard DOES work on an 8-year-old Power Mac, using only 5.9GB of space upon installation (that's without all the extraneous stuff such as drivers, etc). The question now is, what are the Leopard applications that work on an old machine, and what doesn't?

The new File Stacks and fans user interface worked, as well as Coverflow, Youtube, Quick Look, and Spaces and Expose. However, the machine choked on equally-important stuff such as DVD Player and Front Row.

All in all, it was a decent performance on a fairly old machine, and gives people reason not to throw out their legacy machines... at least, not yet.

New House episodes won't be on iTunes - Image 1An Apple spokesperson has given word that the new episodes of House will not be available on iTunes. This was expected considering the main company producing the show, NBC Universal, has decided not to renew its contract with Apple which expires this December.

Apple has given word that negotiations for a contract renewal fell through because the production company wanted more than double the wholesale price for each episode. A move which would have pushed the price of each show to US$ 4.99. NBC Universal seems to have already found other means of distributing their content online with Hulu, an upcoming joint online video venture with News Corp. that will be challenging YouTube for market dominance once it goes live.

The company pulling out its content has many speculating regarding its impact on the popularity of Apple's media service. Considering that NBC Universal content is credited for 40 percent of all video downloads on iTunes, there might be a very big drop in user downloads once the split has been completed.

GUI inconsistencies found in the iPhone - Image 1 GUI inconsistencies found in the iPhone - Image 2

Everyone has been raving about the iPhone. This comes as no surprise as it really is one hell of a phone. However, considering it's Apple's first stab into the mobile phone market, it's expected that it will still have some flaws.

One of the problems that has been pinpointed is the lack of consistency with its Graphical User Interface (GUI). One of the main complaints from users involve the location of  the "compose email" button. Other phones have this on the same place consistently, however, the iPhone places this in various locations depending on the application you're running. Here are a few examples from tuaw.com:
  • Compose Button: The compose button, which looks like a square with a pencil through it, appears at the bottom right of many Mail screens and in the SMS Text application at the top-right of the screen. The Reply/Forward button appears just to the left of the Compose icon in Mail. Tap this to reply to a message or forward it on to another party.
  • Envelope Icon. In the Notes application, the envelope icon appears on the bottom of the page, to the left of the garbage can. Tap it to email the current note.
  • Use-For Icon: The use-photo-for icon appears at the bottom left of the screen. It looks like a rectangle with an arrow jumping out of it-the arrow is basically a mirror of the Reply/Forward button. Tap this and select Email Photo from the pop-up menu.
  • Share: You can share YouTube video and Safari URLs by email. Tap the Share button on the Information page in YouTube and in the navigate-to-URL screen in Safari. To find this in YouTube, tap the blue reveal button located to the right of the video name. In Safari, tap on the URL bar and then look up and to the left.
These inconsistencies show a very modular method of designing the iPhone. The product could have been better streamlined with its different applications working in a more standardized manner. While this is a minor issue and is easily overshadowed by what the iPhone does right, Apple will hopefully take this into consideration when designing future phones.

A lot of videos have been floating around the 'net about people finally cracking the mystery surrounding the iPhone code, making it work with any sim card inserted into it. However, unlike most anonymous videos regarding the subject, geohot and his group have found a full hardware unlock for the iPhone and made a careful documentary of it in a video on YouTube and on his site.

Geohot has even gone as far as detailing the steps on how to unlock it on his blog, with the standard disclaimer that doing so may inadvertently brick you phone, so do so at your own risk. Even now they are working on a software unlock for the iPhone as well, telling everyone to stay tuned at their site when more updates arrive.

The "legendary" unlocked iPhone was even put on sale at eBay at a starting bid of US $540. So far it has received up to 10 bids and has risen to US $1,575 as of today. The items in the eBay auction bid include: the phone, the serial dock accompanying it, as well as the official unlock switch depicted from the blog.

While this sort of practice may not exactly be something that Apple may approve, it just goes to show that no matter how fool-proof the technology claims itself to be, the industry itself is an ever changing and ever evolving process that people will continually surpass and even improve it when applied properly.

Hats off to Xerox for this tip!

Google video - Image 1A bit of bad news for Google Video users: the media you rented or bought from the web giant's online store will no longer be viewable after the site is shut down by the parent company.

Google said there will be no refunds for any of the transactions, but compensation will come in the form of credits in Google Checkout, the company's online paying service.

The decision to shut the site down came after top officials decided that the Google Video service has become irrelevant due to the success of YouTube, which it also owns and uses to sell videos.

The move was branded as a big mistake by analyst David Card of Jupiter. He also added that the shutdown and the no-refund policy are making consumers more wary of digital media purchases.

"We've seen a physical format-device combo go out of manufacture before: wax cylinders, 8-tracks," says Card. "But can you think of any consumer-purchased medium that actually becomes unusable while there are players that still work?"

Hacking the iPhone's EDGE connection for your laptop's net-surfing pleasure? Nate True over at the cre.ations blog points this out as an interesting proposition with the srelay application, which when properly uploaded into your iPhone, turns it into a SOCKS server. Before interested readers can get cracking, however, the hack requires that owners run their iPhone through the Jailbreak app, and have had the phone tethered to their PC.

The instructions should be available in the read link, although readers are warned that using the iPhone's EDGE connection for their laptop may get them into hot water with AT&T terms of service agreement. Furthermore, the instructions that will be provided for were done using Windows only - the author has yet to test them on a Mac. And definitely no word if this may conflict with the previously detected Vodafone exploit.

To give you an idea of how the whole hack will look, we'll also provide for this similar YouTube video we picked up, posted by buzzert1.

Will the iPhone blend? That is the question.

The crazy folks at Blendtec have pulverized almost each and every sundry item under the sun: make-up, toilet flushers, Transformers, torches, video cameras, and - with a touch of normality - a can of EZ Cheese. With the can.

Not satisfied with all of the outrageous things already submitted to the ultimate test of blending, fans from Youtube egged Tom Dickson and the rest of the Blendtec team  to try and see how an iPhone will hold up to the ultimate blenderizer tool, just in time for the current iPhone craze. From what we have seen in the video, we can safely say that the iPhone does have some durability built into it. Our bleeding hearts still couldn't get over the sight of the iPhone getting violently chopped, though.

So, will the iPhone blend? Check the video to find out.
