Tangerines are oranges that are square? If we had something like this for those dance machines in the arcades, our lives would be so much better. The Potion Factory team has finished with version 1.0 of their music arrangement app for the Mac, known as Tangerine!

Tangerine!, now with the exclamation point, is an iTunes plug-in that automatically arranges your music based on the beats per minute (BPM) of the songs. Unlike arrangement by genre, this lets you make playlists that the app deems to be moving with a certain beat, so if you want to go jogging with a quick beat, you might find everything from electronica to "Tunak Tunak Tun" on your final playlist . (A Daler Mehndi classic, by the way... - ed.)

Unlike the free beta versions, however, the latest version is now neither in beta testing nor free. It's currently priced at US$ 24.95, so only serious beatmasters may want to apply. You'll also need to use Mac OS X 10.4 to run the plug-in. Still, if you've got a hankering to figure out which songs move as fast as "Total Eclipse of the Heart," then this would be the app for you.

TangerineHere's a sweet deal for you iPod owners out there: Potion Factory's just released their latest iTunes app.

Named Tangerine, its a music organizer that sorts through the songs you've got in your iTunes library, and automatically sorts them based on their Beats Per Minute (BPM), allowing you audiophiles to arrange music by their speed and intensity.

We thought the guys who've been having problems sifting through their tracks during their workouts could use this - there's a  world of difference between moving to the rhythm of a techno beat and Beethoven.

Potion Factory does warn potential users: It's a Tiger-only, and it can't analyze tracks purchased from the iTunes shop due to its current programming - see the source link for details if you run into any problems.

fake leoWith so many fake screenshots of the upcoming Mac OS 10.5 Leopard leaving their tracks all over the Net, one guy with a lot of time on his hands (and a few stuff he wants to get rid of) woke up one day and said to himself, "Why not make a contest out of it?"  And that's how The Fake Leopard Screenshot Contest was born!

Phil Ryu isn't joking he assures all wanna-bes out there. He even has a tagline to go with the contest: A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a fake one is worth nearly a thousand bucks of software! Not exactly the kind of money Taylor Hicks brought home from AI but it IS something.

First the rules:
  • All entries must be ourageously awesome fake screenshots of the MacLeopard.
  • Entries can include multiple screenshots (limited to 5), with one entry per person.
  • The contest deadline is Saturday, July 22nd, 12 PM EST.
  • The winners will be announced on Monday, July 24th.
Entries will be determined by a panel of judges on believability, creativity, and the Â?insanely greatÂ? factor, made-up features and applications. "In other words, just make it really cool."

Now the prizes:
  • iPulse ($12.95), IconBuilder ($79), Xscope ($16.95) and a free StockIcon set of your choice ($349) by The Iconfactory
  • Delicious Library ($40) by Delicious Monster
  • ShapeShifter ($20) & WindowShadeX ($10) by Unsanity
  • NewsFire ($17.99) by Dave Watanabe

Phil says if you tally up the cost of the prizes it comes to just under $900. But add the trophies (below) for the three winning faux screens and you can make that an even grand. So far, Phil has received 10 entries.
