Computer and electronics companies including LG, Panasonic, NEC, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba are planning to come up with a set of standards for WiHD or WirelessHD. WiHD is a high-definition digital interface - it will let devices communicate with each other to share high-definition audio/video streaming and also to allow high-speed data transmission.
Basically, it's like a WiFi standard, only more robust and manly. WiHD aims for 5 gigabits of data per second - and up to a distance of 30 feet. Transmission will take place at the 60GHz frequency. To compare, WiFi operates at around 2.4GHz to 5-point-something-GHz. 60GHz! That's a high frequency usually only used by the military or in ship-to-ship communications! Thinking off the top of my head here, I can't name any company who hasn't wholeheartedly pursued RF technology and incorporated it into their products. Well, actually I can. That would be Apple and its iPod line.Though Apple relies on the tech for other devices, it hasn't made the full commitment to the wireless technology in its iPods. That may change, according to Mobile Mag, who speculates, based on information it has received, that Apple may be preparing to introduce EDGE technology in its new iPods. A reader, who identifies himself as a mechanical engineer with Panasonic Mobile in Atlanta, correctly tells us that his office is being shut down. That means a bunch of engineers are looking around for work. According to the reader, Apple hasn?t been interested in mechanical engineers like him, but they have been snapping up RF engineers ?like there is no tomorrow?. Here?s where it gets good ? they are specifically looking for people with EDGE experience. An online job listing on Apple's site confirms this information (jobs.apple.com), an opening for a Sr. RF Engineer is listed. The job description is as follows; "The Sr. RF Engineer will define and design Apple future wireless products. Here's hoping that news is true, and that it applies to iPod products.
