Bookmarking support now available for NES.app v1.11.2 - Image 1Homebrew developers nervegas and jordan seem to be working overtime to improve their popular NES emulator homebrew for Apple's iPhone with the latest version of NES.app.

One of the biggest additions that NES.app v1.11.2 has to offer is the new bookmark support, which allows easy access to the list of games you have loaded into the application. Also, the developers were able to isolate the bug which causes random crashes on the iPhone SW 1.0.2 and below.

As always, other small cosmetic tweaks were also added to brush up this already nifty little application. For those of you who are interesting in downloading the latest version of NES.app, we have an archive available through the QJ.NET download link provided below. Just make sure to check out the readme file that goes with the program.

Here's the updated changelog since we posted the previous version in NES.app v1.10.0:

  • Added pre-game options (delete save, bookmark, etc)
  • Added navigation bar titles

Screenshots of nervegas' NES.app homebrew NES emulator application for iPhone - Image 1 Screenshots of nervegas' NES.app homebrew NES emulator application for iPhone - Image 2

It's been a little more than a week since homebrew developers nervegas and jordan updated their much celebrated NES.app, an old-school NES emulator for the Apple's iPhone, with its previous version of v1.9.1. Considering the amount of time since their last update, only a few minor cosmetic changes were added since then.

However, the number of changes, no matter how insignificant it may seem, shows the dedication that nervegas and his development team put into this open source homebrew application. For those of you who are interested in downloading this nifty little emulator, just make sure to check out the readme file that goes with the program.

Here's a list of the changes since the last update:

1.10.0 [nervegas]
  • Un-fixed vertical scrolling to fix problems caused by it
  • Added button bar across bottom
  • Added 'most recent' view of last 25 played games

Duck Hunt - Image 1The NES.App emulator for the Apple iPhone just keeps getting better. With this new release, the Nintendo Entertainment System emulator now stands at version 1.9.1. Here's the changelog for this release:
  • Fixed vertical scrolling; fixed minor glitches in some games
  • Show all 240 scanlines
  • Palette tweaks to fix zapper for some palettes
Those following the development of this application will remember that Zapper support was added in version 1.9.0. The addition of Zapper support allows users to play lightgun titles such as Duck Hunt by tapping the iPhone's touchscreen to shoot.

For a full list of lightgun titles that you can play using NES.App, check out our coverage of version 1.9.0. Remember to read the readme file included in the download before you install NES.App.

Metroid on NES.app - Image 1 For those of us currently enjoying the wonders of retrogaming with NerveGas and Jordan's Nintendo Entertainment System Emulator for the iPhone, NES.app, we've got some very good news. The latest version, v1.9.0, now has built-in Zapper support!

Of course, this doesn't mean that you'll be hooking up the Zapper to your Apple gadget soon. Instead, you'll be tapping the screen to make shots in games such as Duck Hunt and Hogan's Alley. While this may seem like making the game a bit too easy - tapping is more accurate than taking aim and shooting, after all - it's still a lot of fun.

On to the changelog!
  • 1.9.0 [nervegas]
    • Tweaks to sound caching to get closer to real-time sync (you should be using auto-frameskip, slow frameskips will cause sound to loop)
    • Added zapper support (tap screen);
  • works with:
    • Duck Hunt
    • Hogan's Alley
    • Wild Gunman
    • Gumshoe (game itself has glitches)
    • Shooting Range
    • Gotcha!
  • Others do not yet seem to work
