iPhone - Image 1Research group iSupply reports that Apple's popular iPhone has sold more handsets than any other smartphone this July. The group also expects the device to come out on top of the feature phone category when the year ends.

The iPhone beat Research in Motion's popular Blackberry models and dominated models from rivals Nokia and Motorola in the smartphone category which encompasses models that have computer-like features.

Under the feature phone category where units with recreational extras such as cameras and mp3 players are classified, the iPhone equaled the sales of market leader Chocolate, manufactured by Korean consumer electronics giant LG.

The iPhone is considered by iSupply as a crossover between the two major mobile phone types due to the diversity of the features included in it.

The firm projects around 4.5 million units of iPhone sold by year's end and suggests that 20 million units could be in North American homes in four years.

Telecom giant AT&T saw a quarter of all iPhone users jump to its fold by virtue of its exclusive deal with Apple. Worldwide sales are expected to pick up even more when the iPhone hits Europe in the last quarter of the year.

iPod washing machine by LG - Image 1

Everyone wants to wear fresh, clean clothes all the time, but hardly anyone ever wants to wash his or her clothes. Now, LG is trying its best to ease the burden and make the whole washing process more bearable by filing a patent for a "home appliance with an MP3 player." It's a washing machine with a dock for your iPod.

What can we say? In the cutthroat appliance market industry, being unique will sell more units. Besides, it's pretty cool to listen to some relaxing tunes to take your mind off the smell of detergent.

There's obviously going to be some more time before we see this one in the market, but it would be fun to see how it does with college students. Now you can bring your washing machine to a house party and be the star of the show.

Centrino Pro Santa Rosa - Image 1Intel's Centrino Pro (codename Santa Rosa) has just been released yesterday and already, companies Lenovo and LG, as well as other lesser known PC vendors, have laptop offerings carrying the fourth-generation Centrino platform.

Apple consumers are now wondering when they will see this technology in their MacBooks. Gadget site Gizmodo reports that one of its chain partner revealed that a new model of MacBook is coming out next week.

It is believed that Apple will eventually shift to Centrino Pro as well but we wonder if that they will be able to do so in seven days. It should be remembered that it took them three months after Core 2 Duo was released to shift platforms.

As you know, Apple will be holding its annual conference - WWDC - this June and if they are indeed making the shift, it is highly possible that they will announce it during the said event. After all, the initial shift to Intel was announced in WWDC 2006. Apple will change platforms, there's no question about that. The only vague thing here is when.

Just so you know, Santa Rosa Centrino Pro features an updated mobile Core 2 Duo microprocessor. The Front Side Bus speed of the chipset has been increased to 800 MHz but it can also be altered to save power.

Colleen McLoughlin sporting the LG Chocolate Phone - Image 1Shiny Awards. The name may not sound like much to you, but it's the Oscars of the techie gadget world. Hosted by none other than Shiny Media, the most recent award ceremonies was held at London, the night of February 21, 2007.

LG, with their Chocolate mobile phone, Roberto Cavalli LG phone and the BH100, bagged two wins, a runner up spot, and the lovely and equally stunning Colleen over there.

Of the most notable, and laughable, highlights during the night was the wicked ASBO Gadget of the Year award. ASBO, short for Anti-Social Behavior Order, describes the gadget that could be best used to annoy people around you. But wait, who needs a gadget to annoy people?

Samsung - those poor chaps - won that award fair and square with their K5 MP3 player. It won not because of its small profile and even smaller speakers, but because the "itsy bitsy" speakers are actually very powerful - almost too powerful.

We also noted that Apple's iPod Nano and (*gasp!* lo and behold!) Nintendo's Wii, bagged their own prizes from this prestigious event. And look, even Bethesda Softwork's The Elder Scrolls Legends IV: Oblivion and Nintendo's Wii Sports gets to bring home something for Mommy.

Computer and electronics companies including LG, Panasonic, NEC, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba are planning to come up with a set of standards for WiHD or WirelessHD. WiHD is a high-definition digital interface - it will let devices communicate with each other to share high-definition audio/video streaming and also to allow high-speed data transmission.

Basically, it's like a WiFi standard, only more robust and manly. WiHD aims for 5 gigabits of data per second - and up to a distance of 30 feet. Transmission will take place at the 60GHz frequency. To compare, WiFi operates at around 2.4GHz to 5-point-something-GHz.

60GHz! That's a high frequency usually only used by the military or in ship-to-ship communications!

The companies plan to have a standard drafted and ready by early 2007. Then they'll put WiHD into all their HDTVs and all their audio video gadgets. So...
  • Will the PS3 take advantage of WiHD in the future? Did somebody mention HDTV? Yeah, Sony is one of the companies (that's their old Bravia ad in the YouTube vid; we chose it for this article because we love the music).
  • Where's Microsoft and Apple? Will they follow suit, team up, or make their own standards? Like WiFi, will we end up with several standards - will there be a WiHD.a and WiHD.b and other standards?
  • The Nintendo Wii shunned HD, right? Will this new development make Perrin Kaplan eat her words?

Mac PhoneAnd the Apple phone rumors just keep on coming. After posting the speculated design of the Macphone, here is yet another update about this much-awaited product.

According to sources of ThinkSecret, it is in their belief that Apple will not be able to release a phone this year due to some "significant technological hurdles" in its attempts to reinvent the cellphone with an innovative ground-up design. Instead, it is expected to be announced at the upcoming Macworld Expo in January 2007. Another big expectation coming from Apple is that it will enjoy the same US market reception that LG's Chocolate and Motorola's RAZR did.

It is also rumored that Apple will integrate several high-end features into its phone, such as a  3-megapixel camera, a 2.2-inch display, and complete iTunes/iPod features and integration. As for the number of music and photos that can be packed into the phone, it will be dependent on the phone's storage capacity, although there is still no confirmation as to that particular piece of information.

Well, if that is to be believed, then we just might be finally hearing some real facts about the so-called MacPhone in a few months' time. For now, let's all just be patient and be smart enough to suspend both judgment and disbelief on rumors regarding this hyped product.
