iPod Video - Image 1It's probably not time to go running for the hills with your mp3 player, but a little information about everyone's favorite music machine is probably in order now. It seems that someone's managed to create the first virus that actually infects an iPod.

Of course, as with any proof of concept, it's not as devastating as one might think. The virus, known as "Podloso" or "Oslo.zip," infects only iPods running the iPod Linux software. When saved to the iPod's memory, the virus scans the hard disk, infecting all the .elf format files. Using the infected files comes up with the message, "You are infected with Oslo the first iPodLinux Virus".

The only bright side so far to this news is that it doesn't have a destructive payload as of yet. Furthermore, iPod Linux is only present in less than one percent of all iPods in the world, due to the specialized nature of using Linux as an OS.

This isn't the first time the device has had a problem with viruses, however. RJump, otherwise known as RavMonE.exe, was a trojan that opened up back doors in Microsoft Windows and was installed into a number of video iPods prior to their shipping.

Doom_front_ipod11290348f Doom_iPhoto_04fjfi83

Wcars05 from iPod linux have ported iD?s classic Doom to the iPod. Currently this is playable on the iPod Photo and will ?work? on the 1?4G?s and the Mini 1G/2G. You must also have the shareware Doom I or Doom II .wad files in the folder with Doom. (only one .wad at a time because there is currently no selector.)

To play, mount your iPod and make a folder like ?doom.? Copy over the doom bin file and the .wad file to the same folder. Unmount the iPod from your computer, start up iPodLinux and open the ?File Browser,? then the ?hp? folder and lastly the ?doom? folder (or whatever you named it.) Finally open Doom and shoot away =)

Keys:
-Rewind : Left
-Fastforward : Right
-Menu : Up
-Play/Pause : Fire
-Hold : Exit
-Action : Use
-Right on the wheel: Y
-Left on the wheel : Enter

Things to fix/add:
-Overhead map
-Weapon switching.
-Launcher.
-Better inputs.
-Scaled video
-Wad selector?

You can get it in our iPod Download section with source.

Windows

  1. Download the viPodzilla Binary to your desktop.
  2. Make sure the file is named "viPodzilla.tgz" (without the quotes), otherwise the file will decompress incorrectly.
  3. Open it with your archiver of choice (WinRAR is one such archiver that supports tar.gz).
  4. Open My Computer, and double-click on your iPod, as to be in the root of your iPod.
  5. In your archiver, select all files and drag/extract them to the root of your iPod (the window you opened above).
  6. Reboot the iPod into Linux and enjoy viPodzilla.
