In the States, the Vespa scooter isn't extremely popular. The scooter can sometimes be spotted in beaches on both coasts, but they're not the phenom they are in Europe, where everyone joins in for some cheap, fun romps through the countrysides.

Those riders have another reason to jump on their little rides: an iPod attachment gives users the ability to crank out some serious tunes on the road. For $300, scooter fans can buy a kit that gives them the ability to mod out their rides to pump out the sound.

Legal music downloads in America and much of Europe more than tripled in the first half of 2005, according to a report released Thursday by the international recording industry.

The report, from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, came just three days after Apple Computer Inc. announced that downloads from its iTunes online music store had topped 500 million.
