Rumors claiming that Apple's iPhone firmware 1.2 for developers has been jailbroken and available for use may not be without merit, as a video surfaced which show an iPhone with new features believed to be made public when firmware 2.0 comes out. Of course, that means Microsoft Exchange and Cisco VPN settings among other things. To see is to believe, so make that jump to the full article! |

It was announced that mobile phone VoIP provider TruPhone is planning to launch its client for the iPhone. Cisco has been planning this for some time now but it looks like this company will be beating good ol' Cisco to the punch. The said VoIP client's compatibility has already been proven possible by using the phone's on-board SIP stack to place the call over WiFi instead of the SIM card. So far, the software being used to perform these calls is still very rough. To place a call, users will first have to "Jailbreak" the iPhone with the iBrickr or iFuntastic then run the terminal software which will place the call. The entire process is very complicated and should not be attempted by less-tech savvy iPhone owners. If you want an easier way of placing VoIP call, TruPhone will be releasing a true beta in about four weeks. If you want to take part in the testing, you should head over to the official site via our Read link to register for the service. |

A recent WiFi - iPhone problem was resolved recently at Duke University. At first it was feared that the iPhone was causing a problem with the WiFi network in the campus by barraging the servers with thousands of media control access requests a second, effectively knocking out the wireless access points. As many as 20 to 30 WAPs at a time was knocked out because of the MAC requests.Recently though, the problem was resolved and the Campus' wireless network provider, Cisco, fixed a glitch in their systems. Apparently, the problem lay within the network and not entirely on the iPhone. A statement released by Cisco stated that the wireless network at Duke University "experience[s] some minor and temporary disruptions in service" given a "particular set of conditions." The specifics of what this set of conditions entail was not enclosed with the statement. Van Baker, research Vice President at Garter in California, believes that the problem was something unique to the system at Duke University. Other universities also use the the Cisco system using the same kind of infrastructure and they did not experience any problems similar to what Duke experienced. Baker surmises that the Duke system has an encryption system not incorporated in the iPhone and that caused the glitch in the system which caused the WAPs to get knocked out. Baker further explains his theory by explaining that "Cisco's LEAP (Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol) is an enterprise deployment not seen in the consumer market at all. The iPhone doesn't have a lot of the features you'd normally expect to see in an enterprise class phone." |

Although Apple and Cisco temporarily settled their dispute over the name "iPhone", industry analysts warned that this does not mean Apple will suddenly open up its more profitable technologies, in particular, iTunes.Instead, the more likely scenario is that Cisco and Apple could partner in the near-term or lower profile projects that could include integrating Cisco's Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP technology into Apple's iPhones. Market researcher IDC senior analyst Danielle Levitas said she doesn't expect Apple to open up iTunes any time soon. Associated Press quotes her saying that Apple partnering with Cisco is more about Apple preparing to tackle the "connected-home" market where digital entertainment is delivered through a variety of devices. Eventually, Levitas said that Apple would open up, and Cisco would be the first to benefit, but this would not happen in the next 12-18 months. It must be remembered that earlier this month, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs urged the world's major music companies to abolish DRM that were preventing Apple from selling music that would play on any device. One analyst said that Cisco could use the iPhone name as a negotiating tool to have Apple open up to the idea of cooperation with other companies. |

While Apple and iPhone trademark">Cisco may have already settled their differences, the iPhone could very well come under fire again. According to Tech2, Quantum Research has threatened to sue Apple if it finds that the company has infringed on its touch-screen patent.Quantum, a UK based touch-sensor manufacturer, is currently checking the iPhone for any indications that Apple is using any of their patented touch-screen technologies. Duncan Bryan, licensing director at Quantum Research said that the iPhone's description suggests that it uses a rear-surface touch screen and has proximity sensing which can tell if it is held to the ear. Both are Quantum capabilities. Tech2 notes that this is Quantum's second attempt to warn Apple about patent infringement. Quantum filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against the Cupertino-based company in December 2005 over Apple's use of Quantum's patented charge transfer technology in the iPod Nano's wheel control. The December 2005 suit is still under process. |

Apple and iPhone trademark">Cisco may have had their share of mudslinging sessions and lawsuits, but in the end, they still got along. Cisco Systems Inc. and Apple Inc. ended their dispute and agreed to share the iPhone brand and Cisco's lawsuit for trademark infringement was also dismissed. Going over the official Apple website, here's what we found out:Cisco and Apple today announced that they have resolved their dispute involving the "iPhone" trademark. Under the agreement, both companies are free to use the "iPhone" trademark on their products throughout the world. |

We've previously reported a few weeks ago that Cisco Systems gave the Cupertino-based Apple up to February 15 to respond to the Lawsuit that they've filed over the iPhone trademark. Well, here's an update to that situation, and from the looks of things, Cisco is one patient bunch. Jennifer LeClaire of NewsFactor Network reports that Cisco is offering Apple yet another extension on its deadline to respond to a trademark lawsuit over the iPhone name. The trouble between the two companies began when, on January 10, Cisco representatives filed a lawsuit at the District Court of Northern California "seeking to prevent Apple from infringing upon and deliberately copying and using Cisco's registered iPhone trademark." Cisco apparently obtained the iPhone trademark in 2000 after completing the acquisition of InfoGear, which previously owned the mark and sold iPhone products for several years. That was around a day or after Steve Jobs introduced Apple's iPhone to the world. Perhaps Cisco felt that this was the appropriate way to let Apple know that any negotiations they had before weren't settled. Just how long is Cisco willing to wait? How is Apple handling this? We'll update you as soon as more information is made available. |

Apple has just gotten a bit of breathing room in their impending court case with iPhone trademark">Cisco Systems over the iPhone trademark, with Cisco Systems giving the Cupertino-based company up to February 15 to respond to the lawsuit. Cisco sued Apple three weeks ago, the day after Steve Jobs introduced
Apple's iPhone without Cisco's permission.According to the Mercury News, Cisco claimed at the time that the two companies had been in discussions for weeks over the use of the moniker, but Apple never signed a final agreement. In a recent joint statement, both companies said that they hope to reach an agreement on both trademark rights and interoperability. The iPhone trademark was obtained by Cisco in 2000 after buying InfoGear, who had been granted the trademark in 1996. Apple, meanwhile, registered the iPhone.org domain name in 1999. In case you've been living comatose under a rock and three pebbles, Apple currently has a whole stable of products with "i" in front of their names. |
