Study points to network weakness as source of iPhone 3G woes - Image 1I'm sure that iPhone 3G users would have heard of the persisting network problems users have been experiencing. Perhaps you may even be one of them. I even heard of one woman who sued Apple for false advertising over the speed of the iPhone 3G's connection.

A new independent research says that it doesn't have anything to do with the device's hardware at all - the problem lies with the carrier networks. More in the full article.

iPhone - Image 1Back in January, we reported that Canadian communications giant, Rogers, will be the exclusive carrier of the Apple iPhone in Canada. This was based on the alleged emails that Rogers has been sending to their customers about the iPhone's availability, but at that time, no public statement from Rogers or Apple has been made.

Fast forward to today, Rogers has now made a public statement. Only problem is the announcement itself - apparently, a Rogers customer rep told CBC news that the company has not announced any plans to carry the iPhone in Canada. So who would distribute the iPhone in Canada?

Website iPhoneWorld.ca didn't buy this CBC news report so they decided to know what's up straight from the horse's mouth. They called Rogers Wireless regarding the report and another customer rep (named Amanda) told them that,

We (Rogers Wireless) are going to offer the iPhone in CanadaÂ? WeÂ?re just unsure of the exact release date.

So basically, it all boils down to who you'll believe more - the CBC news report or iPhoneWorld.ca's information. You be the judge folks!

According to MacNN, the upcoming Photoshop CS3 is called a "major upgrade," coming with new innovations in editing power and productivity for designers and photographers. An entirely new version, Photoshop CS3 Extended, also has valuable tools for 3D, motion graphics, image measurement and analysis for professionals.

Consumers can get Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended as stand-alone applications or as part of the expanded Adobe Creative Suite 3. Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended will begin shipping in April to customers in the United States and Canada. The former carries an estimated street price of US$ 650, with upgrades going for US$ 200. The latter, meanwhile, will go for an estimated price of US$ 1000, with upgrades starting at US$ 350.

iPod tax to be imposed in Canada? - Image 1The Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC) - an association of composers, recording artists, publishers, and record labels - is asking the Copyright Board of Canada to re-introduce a controversial extra fee into the sale price of MP3 players in Canada. If the fee is imposed, the average price of the said devices could climb by as much as CAN$ 75.

"We'd all like lots of things to be free," said David Basskin, a member of the CPCC's board of directors. "But those who create the music deserve to be compensated."

According to the Canadian Press, the Federal Court of Appeal struck down a similar "iPod tax" attached to the price of the hard drives of MP3 players over two years ago. The Canadian Press noted that at the time, these didn't fall into the category of "audio recording media" because, unlike CDs and cassettes, they can't be separated from the device that plays the sound on them. Under current legislation, the Copyright Board isn't allowed to place a levy on a playing device like a CD or tape player.

The CPCC is now asking the Canadian Copyright Board to consider MP3 players as a whole, hard drive included, under the category of "audio recording media." The group is seeking levies ranging from CAN$ 5 to CAN$ 75, based on the capacity of the player's hard drive.

David Fewer, an intellectual property law professor at the University of Ottawa, however, remains skeptical that the new approach will work given current copyright legislation. According to Fewer, MP3 players fall into both the categories of "player" and "medium." "They're really getting quite existential here," he said. "They're asking the copyright board to look into the soul of an iPod and determine its true identity. That's hard to do."

Rogers - Image 1In the U.S.A., Cingular would be its exclusive distributor. In Canada, Rogers seems to have secured that exclusive contract which could equate to lotsa profits. Apparently, there has been no public statement made yet by either Rogers or Apple, but the communications giant has already been sending emails to customers. E-mails which contain the following:
  • The iPhone will first be introduced in North America
  • Cingular is the only wireless carrier to launch the iPhone in the United States
  • Rogers is actively working with Apple to launch the iPhone in Canada as soon as possible and will be the exclusive provider of the iPhone in Canada
  • Apple is planning to introduce the iPhone in Europe (Q4 2007) and Asia (2008)
  • Please be advised that Rogers will be offering the iPhone exclusively in Canada
  • Launch date and pricing for Canada are not yet available
  • Other Canadian wireless carriers will not launch the iPhone, Rogers will be the only Canadian wireless carrier to offer the iPhone
Since Canada is part of North America, could it be that the iPhone will launch in Canada at the same time as in the U.S.A.? Well, we all know that Apple speculations are a dime a dozen. Anyway, there's no word yet on the iPhone's pricing in Canada or what kind of contract might Rogers have for the iPhone. Rest assured that we'll keep you posted about this matter.
