We've got lots of great stuff going on in the iPhone's homebrew community, it's not a good thing to miss out on it if you own an iPhone. Here's another good homebrewed application that may just prove to be more than useful to iPhone users: Torrentula, a BitTorrent client for the iPhone (here's another torrent client for Apple's mobile). Hit the full article for more information. |

PC World, a global computer magazine, has recently named some of the most influential people on the internet. Net heads, here's the top five of a list of those persons who move and shake the internet; we've arranged them from the fifth to the first for emphasis.
5. Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia - Admit it: whatever piece of information that you get/cite, trivial or otherwise, often comes from Wikipedia. It's even been cited in more than 100 US court decisions since 2004. 4. Mike Morhaime, President of Blizzard Entertainment - Some say that there are only two MMO's: WoW, and everything else. Eight million people (and still counting) plus a chance to obtain the Blade of Eternal Justice put this guy at number 4.3. Bram Cohen, Co founder of BitTorrent - This math and programming whiz kid put up BitTorrent, a way to download large files (like movies) by sharing the burden across hardware and bandwidth. 2. Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple - DRM-free music and internet browsing through iPhone puts him on top - again. 1. Eric Schmidt, Larry Page, and Sergey Brin, Executives of Google - The most trafficked site on the internet is bound to influence internet users the most. |

Open Source in Mac OS X applications has led to the onslaught of freeware that takes BitTorrent client (or P2P downloading) into a new level. Just recently, Transmission v0.6 gets upgraded to v0.7, which comes packed with more features that v0.6 has not been able to accomplish. A good example is the icon equivalent of dock icon badges which was spiffed up. If you download the new beta version below, you can see for yourself that the mechanical looking icons have been replaced by more handsome lever-like design. Also, if you activate the Autodownload option, it will copy .torrent files on the desktop to XtorrentÂ?s support folder and start downloading them. This reduces the hassle of downloading files that you don't want to go straight to the desktop. Another feature that points to this direction of hassle-free simultaneous torrent downloads is the "Finder" which allows you to sort torrents by entering status or keyword filter. We may not be able to cover fully all the features of this latest beta upgrade for Transmission as we've yet to see whether it'll be as popular as the earlier one. Yet, if it weren't for the drawback that it has an unreliable stat reporting, we guess this upgrade far surpasses any BitTorrent client predecessor. Best thing is it's just a few hundred kilobytes worth of download, so there's really nothing to lose if you try it. Download: [Transmission v0.7 Beta] |

Last week we reported a review of 5 BitTorrent clients that supported Mac OSX, with the results pretty inconclusive. There wasn't any super Mac OSX torrent clients that really stood out, and hopefully this latest program called 'BitRocket' should be much better. The feature list is very impressive, with the User Interface along featuring:
Not only does this mean that they can usually get much better speeds than downloading an attachment, they can pause, stop and resume the file when they wish. No excuses for 56k users! Beware though, this client has a maximum file transfer size of 2GB, so don't try sharing files over that size. Download: [BitRocket - Mac OS X BitTorrent Client v0.2 beta] |

If you're a Mac user, you might be a bit disappointed with the available
BitTorrent (BT) clients. They're not as many as compared to those for
Windows machines. Being a Macuser myself, I know the plight we have to
go through. But still, let's not lose hope. There are actually good BT
clients out there. And Torrent Freak has given us a lowdown of the more
popular ones.
This is the grandest daddy of them all. Kinda like your "default" BT client if ever they were to start packaging OS systems with one. It's like your most basic torrent app, and according to Torrent Freak, it's about as "feature-full as the Safari's download box." Well, that's not saying much, but still, some people (like me) wouldn't mind simple interfaces. Kinda like a "lesser features means lesser confusion" sort of thing. Transmission is an open-source project from HandBrake. What's neat about this client is that it allows you to see your download/upload rates right on the Dock without having to open the window itself. It also help the user with "cleaning up" .torrent files when they are done as it automatically trashes them from your desktop. One unfortunate thing though is that Demonoid (one of the leading torrent directories) has banned this application due to its supposed refusal to "adhere to standards." Well, you win some, you lose some. Read on for the entire list. |

Seems like Apple just lends itself to these "Top Ten"
lists. Today's is called "The Ten Most Beautiful OS 10 Applications,"
courtesy of Phil Ryu. Although whether this is "beautiful" in the
aesthetic sense or just "beautiful" in their ease of use and overall
utility, we're not sure. It's all in the eye of the beholder.
Decide for yourself... here, then, without further ado, are today's "Top Ten." #10: TRANSMISSION A P2P application, the recommended BitTorrent client. An "exercise in simplicity," according to Phil.
That's just the tip of the iceberg!! Read the Full Article for nine more beautiful apps! |

Now that Apple dominates the music world, film studios are afraid the computer company has its eye on the film industry as well. Nonetheless, several Hollywood studios are currently in negotiations with Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Other studios, wary of dealing with a member of Disney's board, are talking with Apple VP Eddie Cue instead. The studios are resisting Job's idea that feature films be priced at $9.99. Typically, library titles are sold to big-box chain stores for much lower prices than new releases. Right now, the studios think Apple should sell similar content at multiple price points, which has not been done previously. According to Variety, film studios are also negotiating with other distributors such as Amazon, Movielink and BitTorrent, to head off any chance of a monopoly. Most major studios will probably have movies available through the iTunes Music Store by year's end. |

One developer thinks resolution independence is one of those rumoured features that could turn fact based on little clues he picked up here and there. According to Dustin MacDonald, "this stuff (referring to resolution scaling) is actually in the OS already. It showed that this "resolution independent" stuff won't necessarily be all vector. Yes, NSBezierPaths and fonts automatically scale correctly, but what about graphics? Although Apple hasn't said anything yet, it only makes sense that they would further the use of .icns files, letting you have different graphics for multiple sizes, scaling near perfectly. This is already the case with all application icons in Mac OS X." Then he cited talks regarding scaling websites. "And we're not just talking about good CSS manners here, these guys are talking about implementing Adobe's vector-based SVG as a first-class image format in WebKit, and most likely OS X. Holy shitz. Obviously, no one is simply joking around here. This is going to happen." And finally some graphic designer spilled the beans that they were contracted by Apple to make icons for the system. "Except, these icons weren't 128x128px, no, they were a whopping 512x512px. I'd say that these kinds of icons would be big enough to be scaled down a fair bit. With larger resolutions on new Macs lately, it makes sense that Apple would do something like this. Even I find myself squinting sometimes when using my 23" Cinema Display at a far distance. Mark my words, this is going to be huge - WWDC can't come soon enough." Until the OS X 10.5 makes it debut at AppleÂ?s Worldwide Developer Conference in August this year, it's going remain as elusive and mysterious as the cat it was named after. |
