Apple's iTunes 7.5 is set to correct various small problems with the software - Image 1If you've been having trouble with your iTunes lately, then Apple has just the solution for you. In a recent article published at AppleInsider, the newest version of the iTunes media software at 7.5 is due as early as next week and aims to deliver a number of small refinements.

The new iTunes 7.5 will feature software updates to increase stability and better management of duplicate song and video entries. The updated software also hopes to help iTunes Store customers attempting to upgrade certain standard iTunes tracks to iTunes Plus versions. With the growing number of consumers increasing due to the price drop of iTunes songs lately, this is mostly tied-in with reports of iTunes Plus upgrades causing the software to hang indefinitely following data downloads, eventually requiring a force quit.

So far, the update is currently in its late beta testing period and is targeted for a release within the next week. However, given the track record of Apple when it comes to critical software releases such as iTunes, let's keep our fingers crossed that the company will push through with the estimated release date. At the very latest, we can all expect iTunes 7.5 to be available by mid-November.

The people behind Joost, which has been formerly known as "The Venice Project", have just recently announced that a beta version of Joost for Mac Intel is now available.

Thanks to the work done by the Client team for the Windows version as well as the cross-platform power of Mozilla, Mac users can now enjoy a version of Joost that "looks very much like Joost for Windows, while behaving very much like a Mac application." The Joost FAQ notes, though, that while the application works fine under Bootcamp, it doesn't work under Parallels yet. Joost needs to access the GPU for some of its operations, and Parallels does not support that at the moment.

If you want to try it out for yourself, you can still sign up for beta testing by clicking on the "via" link below. Remember, the whole thing's still in beta, so be on the lookout for bugs. The devs are going to be giving out t-shirts to those who submit the best bug reports, so keep your eyes peeled.

The betaIt's a couple of days late, but we think it can still afford to be labeled important news. Now up for beta testing is the Gentoo PPC64 PS3 LiveCD, which will enable you to use a GNOME desktop environment on both the PS3 and the G5 Apple PowerMac.

If you don't know what GNOME is, it's a kind of open-source desktop environment that people have updated with open source versions of the software normally found in other operating systems. In other words, it's an alternative desktop choice that also has a big, supportive fanbase for newbie questions.

In addition to GNOME, the LiveCD also has Audacious, Evolution, Firefox 2-X (Bon Echo), Gaim, Gimp-2, and Xchat software included, which make it a pretty hefty package. You can find more information on the ins and outs of this new development at the source, and feel free to check the additional link for download mirrors. Just look for the "experimental/ppc64/livecd" directory in your respective mirror sites. Enjoy!

Tangerines are oranges that are square? If we had something like this for those dance machines in the arcades, our lives would be so much better. The Potion Factory team has finished with version 1.0 of their music arrangement app for the Mac, known as Tangerine!

Tangerine!, now with the exclamation point, is an iTunes plug-in that automatically arranges your music based on the beats per minute (BPM) of the songs. Unlike arrangement by genre, this lets you make playlists that the app deems to be moving with a certain beat, so if you want to go jogging with a quick beat, you might find everything from electronica to "Tunak Tunak Tun" on your final playlist . (A Daler Mehndi classic, by the way... - ed.)

Unlike the free beta versions, however, the latest version is now neither in beta testing nor free. It's currently priced at US$ 24.95, so only serious beatmasters may want to apply. You'll also need to use Mac OS X 10.4 to run the plug-in. Still, if you've got a hankering to figure out which songs move as fast as "Total Eclipse of the Heart," then this would be the app for you.

Coversutra

Before your brains go into overdrive, Coversutra is a shareware application that deals with album artwork. This means you don't have to tire your eye out reading through gazillions of files. Instead, you'd have the ease of browsing through colorful and artistic album covers.

However, even if this application has been conceptualized long before the iTunes 7.01 with pretty much the same function came out, the Coversutra must incorporate something in its design and build that will make users take a second look.

The application isn't released yet, however, private beta testing is now on its way and hopefully we'll be able to check out this application soon.

Midnight InboxMidnight Inbox is at the heart of getting things done - a to-do list and file manager optimized for those who use the David Allen Co.'s Getting Things Done personal productivity techniques. With its clean lines and elegant typography, Mac OS X Tiger users will find it as the best in its class for keeping lists and notes. That's not all that Midnight Inbox has up its sleeves, though.

Having just recently finished going through beta testing, the newest version boasts great software stability and performance tweaks. With automatic collection of incoming items such as new email, documents and calendar events, guided and automatic processing of those items into projects and next actions, and gentle reminders of the two-minute rule already integrated into the downloadable demo, Midnight Inbox is certainly coming together into a must-have organization tool to help keep OS X Tiger users stress-free and on top of their world.

The original September 30 release date for Midnight Inbox has been moved to an as-of-yet unspecified time in the near future, but expect this dandy little application to make even more leaps and bounds before then. Right now, a downloadable demo of Midnight Inbox v0.9.5 is available at the Midnight Inbox dev blog. Just click on the 'via' link below to go there.

apple vinylEver-expanding and challenging the technology and innovations catering to the music industry, iPOD creator, Apple, has been Beta testing its newest program on iTunes, "Just For You". This is a new program that aims to aid music buyers in choosing their purchase.

Basically, it is an automated "suggestion box" that will suggest to the buyer what other music they might want to have, based on the purchase that they made. By simply logging on to iTunes music store, you will then be able to view the suggested songs and albums.

While interesting, it must be said that the results may not necessarily be accurate. After all, its manner of choosing other music that you may want to listen to is not based on its personal knowledge of your taste or personality. Simply, it sort of links together music that may have something in common, such as their genre. So, if for example, you buy an album of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, it might then suggest that you also get Foo Fighters, solely based on the principle that they have uptempo alternative beats.

But although the results may sometimes turn out to be unexpected, even far-off, "Just For You" is still a great way to expand your musical horizons. You never know just what treasure it might turn up for you.
