iPhone more powerful than Nintendo DS, PSP combined - Image 1

The iPhone isn't just a pretty face. We all know that little baby has some power going on behind its touch screen hood - but to compare it against the likes of the PSP, much less the Xbox and the PlayStation 2, would be saying something.

Speaking at QuakeCon 2008, id Software's co-founder John Carmack showered the iPhone with praise as a powerful gaming platform. One of the more significant advantages it has, he says, is the ability to deliver games with rich graphics, and a large screen.

He doesn't stop there though. He also hails the iPhone's SDK as being highly intuitive, and that its hardware is at par with the Sega Dreamcast, and almost up there with the PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox. That's saying something. He goes on though, saying that the iPhone's more powerful than the Nintendo DS. And the PSP. Combined.

Carmack doesn't believe that the iPhone is the end-all for mobile gaming though, especially since Apple doesn't seem inclined for the gadget to be more of a gaming platform. Which you can't blame them for. It's a phone, after all.

He finishes saying that there are those in Cupertino trying to plow the field for gaming on the Mac and the iPhone. id Software is currently developing two titles for the iPhone, in fact, though Carmack didn't elaborate.

it has unlimited buttons...

with multitouch function -which might give a new play style-...fingers you use to play with are limited...then comes the need for shoulder buttons

   Re: Xastabus - 2008-08-04
 » It could work...

Only if they redesigned it to have at minimum a D-pad and at least two action buttons.

Sure the DS has a few touch screen only games, but touch-only interaction is more limiting than mouse only.

I suppose you could create on screen controls like some of the DS games have, which would work a lot better with multitouch and could be more dynamic... It just wouldn't have the same feel as real buttons.

Also, the virtual controls would have to be spot-on or someone like me would probably crack the screen by pressing too hard out of frustration.

Well too much Hard Ware for a Cell Phone?!

No such Gaming Software to prove that Hardware!

What a waste of technology then...'
Besides not too many buttons to considerate the Iphone a Gaming Device just Touch and one button to turn on, yeah it could be a DS competitor with that, but no be a Gaming device at all...'

Why don't they call it " IPlay" then!?
If is better than the PSP, DS ?

Ohh Apple the holly's ***** in the world of Technologies!
Go back and make me apple pies lol
Thanks

Not different from that idiot at valve make one good game with samey sequels and think they know everything.

   Re: avatar76 - 2008-08-03
 » Don't disrespect

Gabe Newell (who I'm assuming you're disrespecting from Valve) and John Carmack are probably most responsible for true advances in gaming technology of anyone. If it weren't for John Carmack we would never had had a quake 1 which at the time was revolutionary, I know the story sucks and the sequels were regurgitated upgrades but they're still important to the software technology we're all playing games on today. Gabe Newell is of similar importance though of more recent vintage without him there would have been no Half Life2 and I don't know about you but I'm still a little awestruck by the technology in that game (particles, lighting, facial expressions etc). Again the sequels are all the same crap again but it doesn't take away from the technology advances the first one made. These guys are key to the advancement of video games they're not story writers or even artists they write the bones that all that stuff gets built on to, and holy crap do they know what they're doing, without them we'd probably still be playing wolfenstein3D. Also don't try to paint me as a quake fanboy I haven't bought a quake game since 1996, I played Half Life2 all the way through but that's all I haven't really got into the sequels. I do most of my gaming on a PS3 or a 360 so I'm not even really into PC gaming anymore (which is where these two guys most excel), the honest truth is I just have deep respect for people that shape our industry rather then being sheep. IF John Carmack says the iphone is a poweful bit of gear I'd be inclined to believe him, if it came from someone else I probably wouldn't but John I'd have to say there's a fair chance he knows what he's talking about when it comes to what a platform can do.

Ive known that the iPhone is more powerful than them both, but why doesnt apple make their own game system, it would be top gun! Call it the apple iBox, or iplay:P or something

if PSP-3000 comes as true, hopefully it is more powerful than the PSP slim and phat combined, or even the iphone:)

» ya I would like t see apple game system

At the mid 1990s they made "Apple Bandai Pippin " but discontinued after 2 years. couldn't compete with the popular consoles at that time..with the high price tag on launch "$599"

even now if they plan to enter console market...they are late and doomed to failure again since there is no place for them for this generation...maybe for next generation

oh man what the ***** is that ***** problem how the ***** is iphone so good and better than psp maybe better or similar to ds sorry for the people who think the same as that *****ass retard known as john carmack carmack=retard john=jackass
   by NomadHeath - 2008-08-03
 » Hmmm...

Although Carmack usually tells it like it is, and I have great respect for the guy, I think he's over evaluating the iPhone as a platform. For one, I don't recall the Dreamcast being better than a PS2 in graphics, and I think the PSP is far closer to a PS2 graphically than a Dreamcast system. So how the hell iPhone can be more powerful than a PSP AND a DS combined, elludes me completely. And yes, all this PSP praise is coming from a DS fanboy.

On top of that, Carmack under-estimates the importance of buttons, of SOME kind, on a device for gaming. Even the most scratch-tastic DS titles require at LEAST 4 buttons, if not more, in conjunction with the touchscreen to comfortably play a game. All iPhone's got is a touchscreen and a motion sensor. Its gimped, as far as serious, core gaming is concerned.

I admire Carmack and id's tenacity in supporting Mac platforms for gaming, but he's just not being realistic here.

once 3rd party companies start making games specifically for the iphone, il say that they have made a decent piece of technology, but until then, il continue to say, its an overated mid ranged phone, invest in omnia :D
