When the iPhone hits next month, companies other than Apple might be able to ride on its popularity. According to reports from Reuters, executives at the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit said that it could also "draw consumer attention to other pricier, high-end handsets.""One of the great advantages of iPhone for us is that it will heat up the music (phone) market," said Denny Strigl, chief operating officer at Verizon Communications Inc. "We're already seeing an interest in music on cell phones we didn't see just a quarter ago, and the gearing up the industry is doing in preparation for it." Reuters notes that mobile phones that combine media management and playback features with the usual data and talk functions have been around for years, but their sales account for only a fraction of the market. One of the main reasons is the oftentimes high price tags of these phones. At an estimated price of US$ 500 to US$ 600, the iPhone certainly fits this description, but consumers who want an all-in-one, multipurpose gadget may overlook that. "People are not uncomfortable plopping down a couple of hundred bucks for a music player or an iPod (and) $100 for a voice phone or a PDA," said AT&T's group president for operations support, John Stankey. "If you think about what a customer invests to solve a problem...I might suggest that the price isn't as substantial as it might look." |

» Jesus, get a clue nimrods!
Everytime I hear **** like this I have to laugh, laugh to stop me from cutting myself over frustration for peoples ignorance.
Seriously, if the market share for such phones was a fraction before the iPhone does that not imply that they pretty much sucked? Yeah, it is as simple as that, they flat out suck. I mean just look at all these media/smart phones. They are badly designed bloated, bulky and very ugly devices that most people are just not interested in having on their person.
I have had a "music" phone for two years and it never occured to me to use it for that purpose. I'd rather have a sleek easy to use iTunes device in the form of my iPod. When I see all these Phone manufacturers knee jerk reaction in the form of their iPhone killer future devices it just shows how clueless they really are.
The iPhone is not special because it does anything new or groundbreaking feature wise. In fact it pretty much only matches other phones feature for feature. iPhone is brilliant because it take all those features that other phones have had for a decade and does them in an extreemly sleek, well designed, gorgious, intuitiv and easy to use way that the other manufacturers never thought of before.
They could never copy or emulate what will make the iPhone a success because they had 10 years to do that on their own devices and they were too clueless to do it. Nokia might be the biggest phone manufacturer in the world but their software and hardware efforts sure pale compare to the newcommer Apple.
The symbian platform is a joke, at my job we often redicule it for its unintuitive and sluggish design. What is the use of flooding the market with a dozen new models each year when all you are doing is to change the casing a little and put a faster processor inside?
Seriously, when I saw the iPhone conference back in January suddenly all other phones started to look like childrens toys to me. Because next to the iPhone that is all they really are.
Apple is doing the smart thing to do one device and do it very, very well instead of squeezing 10 or so mediocre devices out a year like the others. Just wait, in a few years the iPhone will revolutionize the mobile industry and everyone will have one once the price drops to more affordable levels. Hopefully this will give the industry the shakeup it so badly needs, Steve Jobs, my hat off to you. I hope you succeed.
