BBC iPlayer comes to the iPhone - Image 1The British Broadcasting Corporation, known far and away simply as the BBC, has recently launched its iPlayer service for use with the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The iPlayer is a service from the BBC that streams on-demand video content to compatible devices with an internet connection. The "internet connection" requisite is actually why it took so long to become a portable service.

The iPlayer can't broadcast on cell networks, but because of the WiFi capabilities of the iPhone and iPod Touch, they are suitable devices to receive the streaming media. The BBC also stated that the service will be available for "many more" devices in the future.

The service is currently free and will allow the Apple devices to videos over WiFi. Unfortunately, the EDGE mobile network used by the iPhone is too slow for streaming video. Now, if only Comedy Central and other networks could also provide free shows...
