Here are some buying tips for gadget skins. You've had your Sony PSP or Apple iPod for a year now, and you've finally got all those cool accessories, but you're tired of that dull glossy look? Well then, we'll help you change it! Believe me, if I had the money I'd buy those gold encrusted casings, but I don't, so we'll stick to those nifty PSP and iPod skins. You can buy them online at sites like DecalGirl and GameConsoleSkins, and they're usually just around 8 or 9 bucks.

So, what are you looking for? A trendy look? A hardcore look? It doesn't really matter, because when they're pasted on your gizmo you can remove them just as easily.

When going for a small skin like one for the Shuffle I'd go for something simple and stylish, so it keeps the device's look and brand image. The PSP skins are a little different because it's harder to make a flat skin for all those edges and holes. Nevertheless the front looks great and maybe I'll even buy it.

SRS-Magic WooferIt would such be an entrancing experience to have yourself transported directly in the middle of your favorite movie, music video or even your favorite video game. But that is not possible, so we go for second best. As always, something is better than nothing.

The SRS-Magic Woofer from FriendTech provides a sound quality that just reminds you of a home theater. And since it supports all audio playback devices, this could very well go with your iPod, Nintendo DS and PSP. It provides then a virtual sound paradise that is also portable, or so says FriendTech Project Manager Aaron Johnson. "In my office, in the car, or even when jogging, the Woofer adds great theater sound. It will be hard getting back to standard audio on any of my devices."

The device carries the following features:
  • The Woofers virtual-surround-sound system enhances any multichannel or stereo-mono audio source; it even supports SRS CS, Dolby Pro Logic (AC-3), DTS, and MP3 SX.
  • Virtualizes the channels, creating "phantom" speakers that extend all around the listener. When receiving mono or stereo content, the Woofer presents an expansive three dimensional sound field.

If you really, really had to party with your iPod like it was 19... er, 89, and you're on a budget, you could try packing together your iPod and a couple of speakers into a Tupperware container and turn it into a makeshift boombox, just like what leevonk out at instructibles.com did. You'll need your iPod, those couple of speakers (that will run off a battery), some Styrofoam or soft-foam packing material, and a see-through Tupperware container that'll fit your iPod and those two PC speakers. Raiding neighborhood Tupperware parties is optional.

Holy rainbow fruits, Batman!

Holy rainbow fruits, Batman! It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's... Uhmm... A finely customized, ever-so-versatile, color-changing, glowing Apple logo!

If you are getting pretty iBummed with the Apple iLogo at the iBack of your iLaptop, you can get it iCustomized for CAD 3.99 (~USD 3.60) with iColours' newest project. And that's worldwide shipping too! For that price, you can get a colored filter of your choice. It could be a normal color, or a design, like a rainbow or tiger-skinned logo. For a little more money, you can buy them in packs of three, six, or a dozen. Their website also provides detailed installation instructions (speaking of tutorials, you might also want to check this out) for placing the colored/designed filters onto your iBook, PowerBook, MacBook, or MacBook Pro. It's a very simple concept but altogether quite ingenious.

However, there remains that one question... are you willing to void your iWarranty? Maybe, maybe not. Whatever the case, it still looks iCool. Personalizing your iLaptop was never this iLovely!

Color filters you can choose from...

A nice DIY project

Don't want to spend your money on all the nice-looking iPod peripherals/Docking Stations that cost an arm and a leg? Here's a nice project to do just to prove that you're "hardcore" when it comes to tech. If you've got some free time, and some spare CDR cases, this "custom" iPod amp can truly emphasize your "1337"(elite)-ness.

Awww... ain't this adorable - and relatively cheap. Rather than blow his budget on an iPod dock, Senator Penguin out at instructibles.com decided to build one of his own, out of LEGO bricks. The dock holds and locks the iPod USB or Firewire cable in place for the iPod to, er, sit on. He calls it the iPod Throne. We call it cute (all pictures from instructibles.com).

Senator Penguin's LEGO iPod ThroneBehind the Throne: the cable routes through the backSen. Penguin's LEGO iPod Throne (w/o the iPod)

The only materials you'll need are LEGO blocks. Lots and lots of assorted LEGO bricks. And since they're LEGO bricks, the secret is that you don't even need the exact pieces Sen. Penguin used in his iPod Throne! You just need to get to the Throne's basic configuration - especially that cable locking mechanism - with what LEGO you have on hand (of course, if you find out to your horror that you don't have enough bricks, you may have to pay a little visit to your friendly neighborhood toy store. Or sneak into LEGOLand for spare bricks. Good luck with that).

Sen. Penguin hasn't tried the dock out on anything other than a 4G 20GB color iPod - but another secret to LEGO is that anything you make can be remade and customized as you see fit. Worst-case, he says, is that the front lip that keeps the iPod from slipping off and the Throne's backrest may have to be adjusted for iPods of different configurations.

Gear4's HouseParty 24/7Nope, that's not an '80s boombox accessory for your iPod (although such a thing would be way cool). That thing to the right of this block of text, the one that looks like a cassette deck, is the HouseParty 24/7, Gear4's new speaker system for apple's iPod. Now, we've covered a lot of iPod speaker systems here on QJ since we first started, and we guess you guys have seen quite a lot of these newfangled iPod accessories yourselves. So maybe you're asking yourself, "What's so special about this thing, then?"

Well, for one, it's a 2.1 stereo speaker system featuring two two-inch six-watt magnetic shielded speakers and an ActiveBass 2.1T twelve-watt sub-woofer. This thing'll keep you and your neighbors up til the morning. So, okay, maybe now you're saying, "So? A lot of speaker systems have more output than that." Yeah, but although those speakers may be able to keep you up longer than the HouseParty 24/7 can, can they wake you up after you collapse from exhaustion?

Yes folks, the HouseParty 24/7 has a built-in alarm clock. Set your alarm and when it kicks in, the HouseParty 24/7 bursts into radio life. Yep, it's also got AM/FM radio with 5 preset stations and a snooze mode between 5 and 20 minutes. Aside from the alarm clock and the radio, the speakers also come with a three-stage dimmer LCD screen and a 16-function remote control allowing direct access to your iPod's menus.

Getting interested? Luckily, the HouseParty 24/7 is available now. It's available in sexy black or cool white and will set you back £99.99 (around $190 US).

nano capplain design

And so the iPod Fashion scene keeps growing. From jeans to headrings, iPod just can't be stopped from being worn, so much so that people just keep coming up with stuff that would be iPod-friendly.

The latest addition to the unofficial iPod fashion line is the iSoundCap. The Florida-based company has released two versions of this accessory- one for the iPod shuffles, and another for the iPod Nano.

The iSoundCap's main purpose for existence is to radically reduce wire interference. And it does just that, rather perfectly. At the back of the cap is a pocket for your iPod, and the headphones are wound around in an included plastic cord manager to prevent unnecessary wire dangling.

The company's foresight of users' fashion needs also adds points. Available in three colors, the styles come in "plain" and "alternative" structures. Surprisingly, the workmanship and feel of these designs were in no way hampered by the added compartments for the iPod.

Not to say that the iSoundCap rates perfect stars, the downside of this product is that, while it is very handy for keeping your iPods in your casual wear, it doesn't really make it easy for you to control or navigate through the screens of your gadget. You can't access your iPod's music without reference to a screen unless you take the whole cap off. Also, it could do with better sleeve designs.

Sure to be a functional purchase, especially for runners and indoor exercisers, the iSoundCap is for sale at the price of $30.

iRockJust when you thought they thought of everything to connect to the iPod, last time it was a thunder-dome type robot, now it's an La-Z-Boy for techies. We introduce, the iRocker by Adonis Furniture.

When we first read this, we thought of a rocking chair. We'd see grandma listening to good 'ol Iron Maiden and Swing Out Sister. Then we see that it resembles more of something that you see on an airplane more than what you see in a home for the aged. It looks pretty comfy for a chair that rocks.

It comes in different colors--faux leather in black, bone, and saddle. Made of durable microfabric with 4 recline positions. Good for days where you just want to lie down and headbang to some Queen. Works with all iPod players. So if you still got that first gen iPod, no worries there, eh? Got audio inputs, a master volume dial with LED, a 15 watt amp and integrated Altek Vision speaker system that could relax you and rock your world whenever you please. It comes with a hefty price range of $100 to $600.
