Sure the Apple TV has nearly everything you can ever want - save for the video games. There is speculation that the Apple TV may be able to support games in the future, though they will likely be bought from the iTunes store or would have to be in a certain format.Well, some people found a way to hack into Apple's entertainment system and got emulators working on it. Reportedly, there are five available emulators for the Apple TV: Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Nintendo64, Nintendo Gameboy Advance (GBA), and Sega Genesis. Instructions and the emulators themselves (we suppose the ROMs as well) now litter the interwebs but we shall insert a disclaimer here: Tampering with the Apple TV might void your warranty, not to mention render the unit useless. According to the report, hackers are also trying to find a way to work the Xbox360 with the Apple TV and are making progress. The "service only" USB port has been hacked into and so enabling the use of joysticks. Rumors say that in/famous Jon Lech Johansen has gotten hold of an Apple TV. We'll see what comes of that in the future. For now, be careful with those emulators. |

After the long wait and disappointment of repeated delays, the Apple TV has finally started shipping. According to Engadget, emails have been sent to those who preordered the Apple TV from the shipping companies and tracking numbers have been duly supplied. So what can we expect under the Apple TV's hood anyway? High definition 720p (and of course standard as well), PC or Mac connection (up to five), downloads via iTunes, a 40GB hard-drive and an Intel processor. We'll see in the long run how the Apple TV will be received by consumers, right after it gets delivered to their doorstep. |

It looks like Apple's working hard to patch all the security holes on the Mac OS X. Security Update 2007-003 is currently the seventh one for this year alone, including third party software like Flash Player, OpenSSH and MySQL.Well, we all know what would happen if you leave your Mac unprotected. That's just like ringing the chow bell and bellowing, "Come and get it!" Vulnerabilities can range from gaining full control of your machine or crashing it, which by all means are both very bad. Here's a quick rundown of which problems Security Update 2007-003 addresses:

Ever been frustrated over conflicting policies? Well, Meghann Marco from The Consumerist thinks that these problems shouldn't even exist. There seems to be some confusion with the policy when buying items with gift cards. According to one FAQ sheet, there are no limit to the number of cards you can use to purchase from 1-800-MY-APPLE. On the Apple website, there appears to be two separate FAQs available, though both state basically the same thing. As an answer to the question "Can I use multiple gift cards when making a purchase?"

The time we heard from the rumor mill was about Apple's new 50 inch display line. Here's another interesting rumor - rather speculation about Apple's plans for its displays.Steven Johnson (author of The Ghost Map and Everything Bad Is Good for You: How Today's Popular Culture Is Actually Making Us Smarter) cites a particular rumor regarding the next Logic which is reportedly designed to kill Pro Tools. The new application would apparently "work with a new line of touch sensitive Apple displays". Johnson notes that that rumor might explain why there are secret Leopard features, no updates on iLife last January, the announcement of iPhone's multi touch interface, the long delay of new Apple displays, and the new application that would rely on touch screens. Well, what do you guys think? Hopefully, we'll hear from Apple soon enough. |

Ever heard of Google X? That's the Google webpage that has an Mac OS X interface. It was a project from the Google Labs but it was pulled down after a day.The interface is pretty cool, but then it turned out that Apple holds the patent for the design. After it was quietly taken down - no official Google or Apple statements were made - around 50 mirror sites turned up like mushrooms sporting the same interface. We may never see an official Google X - but then you never know. By the way, it has a nice page footer too. "Roses are red. Violets are blue. OS X rocks. Homage to you." |

Hmm, we've reported about this just two weeks back but we felt it was worth touching back on as PocketGamer airs some pretty interesting points regarding this rumor. For those who missed that post, here's a quick overview. iPhone World got a tip from an anonymous and reliable source that World of Warcraft is coming to the iPhone and also Video iPod. According to the said source, he/she saw a beta of WoW on the said Apple products. Curiously, the anonymous Apple person (so much for Apple's well guarded secrects) claimed, "Watch out for the iPhone and their new video iPod when it comes to gaming. Imagine playing WoW on them using the touch screen interface. Think of the impact it's going to have on the handheld game market and Apple’s revenue." This rumor was greeted with a mixture of absolute disbelief and some sort of "I wonder if it's really possible". According to PocketGamer, the iPhone's (and Video iPod's) leap from conventional mobile gaming to online gaming is just hard to compute. They are not completely discrediting the information since the iPhone reportedly has a full OS X (WoW has been successfully ported to the Mac OS). Throw the ARM11 processor into the pot plus touch screen capabilities and you get something that would resemble a handheld. Could it really be true? Stay tuned for more updates and let's hope that the next Apple person we hear from is reliable sans the anonymity. |
