If Jon Lech Johansen - the same Jon Lech Johansen they call DVD Jon who reverse-engineers data formats and has become infamous for hacking encrypted DVDs so that they play in Linux at the tender age of 15 - is after your technology, would you lose sleep over it?Well apparently not Apple head honcho Steve Jobs. After a meeting with Johansen and his partner Monique Farantzos some time in January discussing their new company plans, he dismissed it by saying that while Apple was not a litigious company, other firms of the same nature might not go so easy on whatever DVD Jon might be up to. Now, while Steve Job's extreme confidence is admirable, will it bite him back in his arse? See, Johansen's plan is to add the DRM rather than breaking it. He wants to license the technology to companies who want their content to be playable on Apple devices. This is not the first time for DVD Jon to get in the ring with Apple. In November 2003, Johansen released QTFairUse, an open source program which dumps the raw output of a QuickTime AAC stream to a file that could bypass the digital rights management (DRM) software used to encrypt content of music from media such as those distributed by the iTunes Music Store, Apple Computer's on-line music store. |

These days attackers are smarter, more cunning, and more dangerous than ever before. If you want to be one up over these worldwide web delinquents, Vicomsoft has just released InterGate Policy Manager v9.2 that is capable of just that and more.It provides you with a set of network security and monitoring tools that keep your organization and your users safe from a wide array of Internet threats. InterGate enforces "Safe Search" mode on all main search engines by filtering out explicit images from the search results. Another notable feature is time control. You can assign specific policies that manage internet access by time of day and/or day of the week. These additional security however doesn't come cheap. InterGate Policy Manager starts at $138 for a five-user license, while a 12-month support contract is $ 100 that includes blocking/controlling other internet applications such as Skype and other IM applications. There's also InterGate Inspect, a content-based filter for controlling Web browsing and InterGate Intelligence to provide detailed reporting, both for $100/12 months. InterGate Policy Manager is priced at $138.00 USD for five users with the mandatory 12-month support contract worth $99.00 USD; the bill would amount to $237.00 USD. The same price is applicable to a Windows OS. |

Ecto continues the Kung-Log tradition of being the best desktop blogging client out there for Mac OSX and Windows users. It supports a wide range of weblog systems, such as Blogger, Blojsom, Drupal, MovableType, Nucleus, TypePad, and WordPress. The key feature of ecto is that unlike your weblog's control panel, you can use this application offline and enjoy the perks of writing and manage entries with the aid of tools like spellcheck, creating links, attachments, and much more. Adriaan is still keeping us in suspense on ecto3. Currently, he is taking his time on the full rewrite of ecto2 to ecto3, so we'll have to wait a little more. Good thing he released v2.4.1 as a worthwhile filler. Adriaan says, "I have decided to release an Intel build of ecto 2.4.1. It is not fully tested and no support will be provided, but it should be a good interim solution for those having trouble running the PPC version on intel Macs." Changelog:

Before your brains go into overdrive, Coversutra is a shareware application that deals with album artwork. This means you don't have to tire your eye out reading through gazillions of files. Instead, you'd have the ease of browsing through colorful and artistic album covers. However, even if this application has been conceptualized long before the iTunes 7.01 with pretty much the same function came out, the Coversutra must incorporate something in its design and build that will make users take a second look. The application isn't released yet, however, private beta testing is now on its way and hopefully we'll be able to check out this application soon. |

After legal run-ins with the Tetris Company on a supposed infringement of the Tetris trademark, Quinn - an implementation of a popular falling-blocks game that shall not be named, unless we want to get sued - lives to tell the tale. The popular shareware that held a spot in Phil Ryu's "The Ten Most Beautiful OS 10 Applications," is back and better than ever. It's still the same Quinn we've known but now has a new online server list, includes a standalone server, shows the number of players on a server in the dock icon and it supports multiple moderators in a server. The first of its stalling features is a durable high impact PolyCarbon strengthened ABS material, that snugly fits your iPod Video and Ipod Nano inside. Second, is the four-digit, resettable combination lock incorporating a locking steel cable, attaching your iPod to your backpack like a keychain, exercise equipment while working out at the gym or even your wrists, if you're that much of a scatterbrain. One word. Trademark. It is a distinctive sign of some kind which is used by a business to uniquely identify itself and its products and services to consumers, and to distinguish the business and its products or services from those of other businesses. It prevents unauthorized use of a mark in relation to products or services outside its range. If Apple does go with the name iPhone, it may have to deal with the internet phone company iPhone. The company offers a Voice Over IP service and has been doing so since 2003. However, the twist is that, Apple has registered for the iPhone trademark way back in 2002. The way it works is that, if, the respective marks or products or services are not identical, similarity will generally be assessed by reference to whether there is a likelihood of confusion. Say, will consumers believe the products or services originated from the trademark owner even if didn't? If the respective marks and products or services are entirely dissimilar, trademark infringement may still be established. Let me leave you with this thought: Is there a trademark dilution looming in the horizon? |

Ever heard that phrase untapped resources? That's what you ought to find when trying to avoid too much interference when you're in the airport. For this task we shall enlist the help of a clever device called the iStumbler. iStumbler is the leading wireless discovery tool for Mac OS X, providing plugins for finding AirPort networks, Bluetooth devices and Bonjour services with your Mac. Release 96 updates the Bluetooth plugin to support device inquiry under Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger), allowing you to monitor all discoverable bluetooth devices, and integrate the Growl framework for notifications. As you can see, channel six is overrun with base stations on their default channel while there was an entire spectrum left entirely unused. What you can do is set your channel to that unused spectrum, say three and restart the base station and you can go from this...
...to this.
So take the road less travelled with iStumbler to maximize the potential of your AirPort. Download: [iStumbler 96] |
