Gina Trapani of LifeHacker.com has tried out the publicly-available Windows Vista Beta 2. After a few hours of trying out the latest Windows OS, the same thought keeps on coming to her mind, "Wow, that's a lot like the Mac." Trapani gives us a side-by-side look at the Mac and Vista OS where we will see the similarity between the two. To quote, "From the emphasis on searching and not browsing (Spotlight) to the Windows Sidebar (Dashboard) which runs Gadgets (Widgets), to the built-in Windows Calendar (iCal), the similarities are striking." Now is it just a Mac bias speaking or does the latest Vista build reflect a Mac OS-esque look? Look at the images and decide for yourself. Mac OS X Spotlight vs. Windows Vista Dashboard So what do you think? |

the only advantage to windows is it's high compatability with games. besides that, mac is better in just about every way

Were you people actually expecting Microsoft to come up with new ideas of there own? All this hype and all they have to show is stuff that Mac users have had for over a year, plus we have an even newer OS coming out around the same time as Vista. And besides, you all must admit the Mac side looks a lot better than the Vista copys.

I mean, yeah, both windows are metal grey and the highlighted icons/text is blue. Besides that, there are no similarities. The icons are as large if not larger than macos but you could switch to larger icons (128x128px even) with XP also. The favourite links section at the left was already in Windows ME, the new menu bar from Vista looks nothing like macos at all, the address bar is there since Windows 95 plus the way how the location is displayed is completely new and never before seen in macos.
The biggest similarity is the search bar at the top right of the window. I discussed this with a friend of mine some time ago.
Put a screenshot of Windows XP next to a Vista one and you will see that most of Vista's optical style is based much more on Windows XP than MacOS.

They don't look a like at all... The windows explorer looks like it aways has, how different do you expect calander programs to look, there is no resemblence in the widgets, and the dashboard program just seems to have the same functionality. And wouldn't you expect a certain amount of functionality, that is shown here, from both of these OS's?

That's the most blatant ripoff since every other Windows version!

» How can you compare a calendar?
Seriously? Who ever put up those two pictures shoud be shot. Every damn calendar looks the same. They do that since the time where computers weren't even invented yet.

i've said it before and i'll say it again, people who prefer windows are either lying or have never tried a mac. or theylll say, "i tried a mac (back in the 80s). it does way less then xp, that thing didnt even have internet"

» Still...
No matter if they look the same or not, you still must admit that Microsoft is just now adding features that Apple has had for over a year. If they didn't steal the look, they stole the features, I mean come on, Apple introduces Widgets, then Microsoft comes up with Gadgets. Hmm, wonder were they got that idea. On a side note, whoever came up with the "Vista Explorer" should be shot. That is UGLY.

» Microsoft being copy cats again?
Safari, Mozilla, and Firefox have had tabbed browsing for the longest time. All of a sudden Internet Explorer 7 has the same features as those three. Its like Microsoft lets all the little guys come up with all the original ideas then copies them years later. They know most of there customer base usually doesn't know about all the small guys so when they coppy other people's stuff they look like they have innovated computer software in the eyes of their very large customer base.

Too bad Microsoft can't innovate, they should stick to making Xboxes since every single Windows release sucks balls. It's too bad they stole Apple's ideas since the first GUI OS release, it's been DeJavu at every release since then and this is no different. I have no doubt they'll copy Leopard once Apple releases that. By the time Microsoft copies those features, Apple will most likely have the next generation rolling out. Get a PC if you're A: Cheap (not that you couldn't get yourself a Mac Mini), B: Dumb/Ignorant, C: Like to play games (in which case maybe you should get an Xbox instead), or D: All of the above. Macs rule!

Why must all bad companies get the most sales? Let's think...
$ony - Copied, 'phat' PS2s fell apart like clockwork, evil, most sales out of the three
M$ - Copied, Windows crashes very often, evil, most sales out of the three

XP has always had better features since before a year ago. I agree on the innovation side that vista exploror looks worse, but only worse than XP's exploror, not mac OSX's it looks waaay better than that feed the needy contraption. In the past, now, and in the future Windows OS's will always be the mundane!

Windows rips off mac!! There now i've got your attention thank u! All the "mac" features mentioned:spotlight, finder etc. have appeared in other OS's! Widgets have been there for long. Didn't Windows have a convention which showed all the gadgets in Vista much before mac actually released them?
Of course, Vista or rather Longhorn was put on hold and now it is finally about to be released(we hope!). Sadly, mac fans have been bought up believing that their "OS" is pure and all the other OS's just copy their stuff. Now don't get me wrong.... of course, both the OS's have their plus and minus(Windows has many security flaws and mac's are bloody expensive!). BTW, i also use a mac.
In the end, who gets screwed??? It's us!!! of course!! Yes, Windows is vulnerable(u can get many free protection tools over the web!). It crashes(u can follow some basic precaution!). This is actually the worst debate that has followed up since Vista showed their gadgets and immediately Apple began a slander campaign and claimed that windows "stole" their ideas(and Apple has also stolen these so called original ideas from other OS's).Get your facts right!Good day
