In a recent interview conducted by community fansite BeyondUnreal, Steve Polge sat down down with BU's hal to finalize the first of many details as Unreal Tournament III preps for an all-out invasion on the PlayStation 3, Windows PC, Mac and Xbox 360. We know start of the story, and we know what enemies we'll face, but what we still don't know, Epic Games' Polge helped single out.
Unreal Tournament first debuted on the PC, and in honor of that tradition the PC version has been engineered to accept low-level hardware rig setups, while allowing monster machines to take full advantage of Unreal Engine 3. Enthusiasts will have another title to gauge their systems' performance, but budget performance PCs won't be left in the dust. In fact, Polge mentioned low level hardware performance was a focus for UT3. "Visually, the game scales very well to a wide variety of hardware," added Polge. But it didn't turn out well for the next generation consoles: although Unreal Engine 3 has been optimized for each platform, as Epic claimed, it won't be running like liquid mercury on the Xenon-based Xbox 360 or even the CELL-packing PlayStation 3. "The game plays a bit slower on the console versions. ... Of course, the user interface will be significantly different on PC to take advantage of mouse and keyboard input, as well as PC monitor resolution," said Polge, but he maintained that every version will be completely identical to each other in content, albeit not in features. Epic did announce previously that PC mods can be utilized over PlayStation 3, but cross-platform multiplayer is still a question that has yet to be addressed. Polge said, "There is some aiming help [on consoles] (although the system weÂ?ve developed, while very effective, feels quite subtle)," which probably means while Epic is considering the idea, it's unlikely to push through without additional time consumed for a control balancing act. There has been no mention of a demo yet as of press time, but we'll be keeping tabs on that. |

Built in aimbot for console users. Nice.

» not like liquid mercury ?
Maybe I understand that wrong, but what do you want to say with "won't be running like liquid mercury" even on a CELL based PS3 ? How do you read that out of the interview? He refered to game speed and the different controls on consoles but where the hell did he mention it would run worse ?

Dude you will soon learn cores > cells. PC FTW.

cell runs 4.5 times faster than dual quad core. ps3 ftw!

I don't deny that a $3,000 rack with 4 cores will outperform the PS3, but you will be surprised how close a $499 console will get. (and people complain about $499 to expensive. I don't get that).

It's in quotes in the article...
"The game plays a bit slower on the console versions. ... "
I Don't doubt it either....because although the CPU's in the 2 consoles are still ok by the standard today..... however the GPU's, especially the RSX are SEVERELY outdated (RSX was outdated before PS3 was even released and although no consumer card has dynamic shaders like the Xenos, all it's other functions/specs are outdated now).......some of the GPU's out there now cost as much as a 360 and a Wii together.....

If it is truly optimized. So many devs are throwing that around these days (Especailly EA) and in truth the games are ported as quickly as they possibly can be.

a good gaming PC is two times as powerful as the PS3 or 360. Both only have a 2 gig (or less) of ram and only 512 MB single video card. yea they have nice processors but everything else is kinda mediocre. it's no suprise that UT3 will look better on the PC. with support for SLI/Crossfire and dual/quad core systems.
and it's easier to make run better on the PC than it is on a console. though in all hoesty we wont know anything until november.

No that's not the case, the reason it will be slower on the console is not because they can't handle the game but rather because of the controllers.
Historically UT series has been faced passed, and this is fine on PC because keyboard/mouse combination have fast response, however a controler does not, and as such the game has to be slowed down a notch to compensate for the controllers slower response, otherwise, you'd get fragged 24/7 when you face up against the bots, this is what I personally thing they meant when they referred to the game running slower on consoles.

It has nothing to do with the controllers....you can up the sensitivity and it moves as fast as the PC (I played both versions)
It has EVERYTHING to do with what Neo said.....the GPU's in the consoles are outdated, they only have 512 ram for both system and video.....and soon, the processors will be outdated, but are still holding their ground.
Fact is you have have PC's whom's video card has more ram then the entire memory of any of the consoles....plus 2+ gigs of ram for system use (probably like 4 or 5 for the crazy people that love to keep their PC top of the line)
However, just the video card for a system like that (and in some cases you have to buy 2) cost more then a 360 or PS3......so it's a trade off.....I personally still enjoy the console experience more, lounging on my couch, opposed to being hunched over in my computer chair....

@destroyer: You are correct it is mostly because of the controllers. But hardware wise the PC can beat out both consoles as well. Though in this case yes it is mostly because of the controllers. However if they have a good enough control scheme up it shouldn't take long t learn it and get good at it. Though as always in FPS games the Keyboard/Mouse combo will never be beaten. And i think thats why they're holding off on the cross platform play because the PC gamers have been playing UT for a decade now and we know the controls, vehicles, weapons while the console people are just learning.
but either way i'm just thinking god that it's still coming out for PC the sametime as the PS3.
