In an effort to curb hacker attacks on their computer systems, the US Army is slowly integrating Apple Macintosh computers into their networks. Apple computers are currently known to be the least vulnerable to hacker attacks. "We used to sell Apples by saying they don't get viruses," said the current head of the Army's Apple program, Jonathan Broskey, who used to work for Apple. The U.S. Army and the Pentagon have become victims to hacker attacks in the past, and was even hacked by someone using a 56k dial-up modem. The Pentagon was also recently infiltrated, with hackers running off with unknown quantities of data. Army officials are hopeful that this move would help beef up the Army's cybersecurity. Currently, only a fraction of the Army's computer network is comprised of Macs - only 20,000 of an estimated total of 700,000 - but they expect the number to grow bigger in Macintosh's favor. However, there are some naysayers about giving Apples to the US Army, particularly software researcher Charlie Miller, who said that a two-platform system may prove to be the weakest link in their security efforts. |
