iDupe is designed to process duplicates and dead tracks in iTunes in a smart way. iTunes now has a "Show Duplicates" command. But it is of limited use. First, it offers no way to remove duplicates while keeping one version of a track. Second, there is no good way to identify which tracks are actually duplicates as opposed to different versions of the same song, the same song with different bitrates, etc.

iDupe tries to deal with this problem intelligently, making a number of judgement calls. It will remove absolutely unambiguous duplicate entries, but use the check marks in iTunes to uncheck the duplicates it thinks are good candidates for removal. Potential duplicates will be ranked according to a number of criteria. It will evaluate whether it is likely to be a loose single track, which version of an album to keep, as well as other considerations. Once you review its choices in iTunes, iDupe can then remove unchecked tracks in a selection from the playlist and from the library and move the corresponding files to the trash, according to your choice.

• Now properly handles "quicktime movie files" which are audio files.
• Music files in FileVault systems are handled with a more informative error dialog. (iDupe is not compatible with music stored in FileVault.)

TunesText Exporter v0.2 has just been released by CyanWorks. TunesText Exporter is a simple application that converts TunesTEXT lyrics data to text files. Requires Mac OS X 10.4 or higher.

ThinkMac Software has just released NewsMac v3.2, an RSS reader that allows syncing with either a Palm PDA or an iPod. This release brings the product out of beta status. From the product page:

When you see something that interests you, you're just one click away from reading that news story in your favorite web browser. Wooden Brain Concepts has released Cast Away v1.0b4 for Mac OS X. Cast Away allows you to remove or uncheck podcasts on a per podcast basis. It fills a gap in iTunes, which doesn't allow per podcast removal scheduling, or scheduling by date. CastAway allows individual podcast removal settings, supports daily schedules, and works with podcatsts from iTunes as well as any playlist created by a third party podcast application.

• OS X 10.4.2 update broke scheduling. Fixed.

iTunes visualization plug-in fans will be pleased to hear of the release of Jacket v0.5.9. Jacket is an iTunes visualization plug-in which displays selected image files during the playback of songs from your iTunes library. Images can be selected and tied to individual tracks, albums, or artists. The plug-in's configuration tools will return album art search results in a web browser based on a user's specified song information, assisting in the process of image association.

Jacket can display TunesTEXT lyrics, if present.

Cyan's Image Chamber has released TunesTEXT v0.3.3, a freeware Dashboard widget for Mac OS X "Tiger" users. TunesTEXT displays the lyrics of the song currently playing in iTunes. If there is no local lyric information for a given track, the widget will search and download lyrics from the internet. TunesTEXT supports songs both in English and Japanese.
