When Apple first announced last year that people will finally be able to backup their data wirelessly through the Mac OS x 10.5's Time Machine application, a lot of people already bought the necessary hardware that was supposedly compatible with this backup software.

The company mentioned that Time Machine will be compatible with Apple's AirPort Extreme router earlier this year, which led to a big number of pre-orders made in anticipation of the new software. However, when Leopard was released last October, Apple belatedly confirmed that Time Machine will not be supporting AirPort drives.

Many felt cheated when the company announced last week that the new Time Capsule backup appliance will be the supported hardware for Time Machine. With the Time Machine wireless base station coming in with up to 1TB of disk space, people who bought the AirPort Extreme began complaining.

Apple was silent on the matter when question whether or not an update will be made for existing AirPort Extreme owners. CEO Steve Jobs failed to mention anything regarding the matter during his keynote last week, although he did mention other updates such as one for iPod Touch and for AppleTV.

While many have the option of replacing their AirPort Extreme routers with the upcoming Time Capsule, people have expressed their displeasure on Apple's rather short-sighted forewarnings.
