Apple Weekend Warrior - Image 1

To herald QJ.NET's first issue of the Apple Weekend Warrior special, we're kicking things off with a healthy dosage of Trojan malware for everyone! Updates-wise that is.

This week's new and improved QuickJump QuickPeek feature (a.k.a. the Weekend Warrior) for the Apple blog showcases some additional windfall from the recently concluded Apple WWDC event. In addition, we've got your usual pickings of the latest iPhone homebrew your mobile phone shouldn't be without.

Anyway, let's get right down to the meat of the matter and talk about the latest happenings over the past week.

Apple in a nutshell (for the week of June 22)

Apple security was rattled a bit when the first ever ARDAgent-based Trojan for the Mac was spotted earlier this week. The culprit was known as "AppleScript.THT", which is able exploit a vulnerability in the Apple Remote Desktop Agent and allows malicious users complete access to your system. Go ahead and read our main article if you want to find out more about it and read up on possible ways on how to safeguard your Mac against the Trojan malware.

We were able also to spot something good for Mac users on the look out for the new OS X update announced by Steve Jobs during the recently concluded Apple World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC). German website Apfeltalk was able to get its hands on some screenshots of what Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard will look like. Aside from upgraded features for Safari 4.0, it will come packed several other goodies sure to entice the Mac aficionado in you.

On the homebrew side of things, developer pyefox has been hard at work updating the iPhone homebrew app, textReader. The latest build of the portable text reader app steps itself up to version 1.0 and includes numerous file format additions, among other things.

Two more homebrew apps your iPhone shouldn't be without are Touchpad Pro and biteSMS, both of which got recent updates a few days ago. The latest build for both apps share the updates in terms of nature - namely, additional language support. Downloading them is as easy as clicking on your Installer.app icon, but make sure to read the specifics on the latest update through our full article first.

What homebrew update would be complete without a homebrew puzzle game to while away the time with? Developer Shaun T. Erickson was able to roll out a new build for aMaze!, bumping it up to version 1.2.3. The new version includes several bug fixes and UI improvements related to your iPhone's accelerometer. With a hundred different levels to go over, aMaze! is sure to give you some much needed distraction when you need a break from school or from work.

To wrap things up, Apple has released its eighth Beta build for the iPhone SDK. Bearing the designation 9m2199, this particularly hefty new kit (1.25 GB in size) includes a developers-only release of iTunes 7.7. If you want to try your hand out at creating your own homebrew apps for the iPhone, then you shouldn't pass up the chance to get your hands on this new developer's tool.

More to come

Apple still seems to have a lot in store for everyone before the summer is out. With the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and the 3G iPhone in plain sight, we'll be sure to pick up any new updates as soon as we get them.

It's still a point of contention whether the upcoming goodies will work as well as their predecessors - homebrew-wise as well as through official applications. However, we guess that we'll just have to wait and see when the actual products finally come out.

Anyway, that's about it for this week's update for the first issue of the Apple Weekend Warrior. Be sure to stick around again next week as we feature some interesting homebrew developments in the very near future (insert ominous music).
