Senior Apple dev: iPod, iPhone are our gateway to the video game industry - Image 1It was only a couple of days ago when we first learned about the new patent filed by Apple, indicating that the company is preparing a new gadget that is capable of going up against Nintendo DS and Sony PlayStation Portable.

One senior developer from Apple said that it is true that the Steve Jobs-led company will be making its presence more felt in the video game industry.

However, the developer added that this will be realized using existing gadgets iPhone, iPod, and iPod Touch. The source added that Apple is planning to license more games for the mentioned platforms and it is the company's way of "testing the waters."

Regarding a full blown invasion of the games industry, the developer commented that it's not going to happen yet. "So don't hold your breath for an announcement of an 'iGame' console just yet," added the senior developer.

Aside from that, the source also described how Apple operates its business model when it comes to games:

From our discussions, it seems Apple is happy working the way it does, courting individual companies and handpicking who it thinks can make the best games or has the best development abilities when it comes to growing the stable of iPod games.

Although I wouldn't rule out Apple beefing up that approach and commissioning more games for its portable devices.
