The scratch caused by a faulty read/write head - Image 1Via Retrodata, we've learned of a particularly nasty flaw in Seagate Macbook drives that could essentially destroy the data on your computer, and by that, we mean literally destroy it.

Some faulty Seagate 2.5" hard drives from China have surfaced and, according to Retrodata, "the read/write heads appear to fail mechanically, quickly causing deep scratches to the platter surface, and rendering the drives practically unrecoverable."

You can check if your Macbook is at risk by going to the System Profiler and looking under Serial-ATA for the revision number, which shows the firmware of your hard drive. If your hard drive has a firmware revision of 7.01, then you might want to back up your data to avoid any problems.

Seagate is on a role.. Damn Chinese junk.

If they're not sending your personal information to a server in china, they're rendering your computer useless altogether.

I purchased a Seagate drive 2 years ago and it failed in a month, along with all my photos and music. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I RMA'd it and was sent it another. It TOO failed after a month.

I called Seagate to complain and they said there was nothing wrong with either of the drives, that , and I quote "I'm sorry, you must have dropped the drive or possibly allowed too much moisture into the area."

Vowed never to buy another product from them ever again.

Weird, I've upgraded about 35 macbook computers, and I have never seen a Segate drive in them. It was always Fujisu drives......
