With the successful release of Apple's new iPhone 3G, it's just about time for them to do an encore with the unveiling of a new iPod model as well, right? Or so it seems. Recent findings from iPhone Atlas supposedly revealed the existence of an upcoming iPod touch model.

Evidence of the rumored iPod touch model was extracted from the source code of the new iPhone OS 2.1 beta. Its file structure display various strings with the designation "iPod2,1". This corresponds with the naming convention given to the current iPod touch, "1,1".

Relating this to Apple's newly released handset, the previous model also carried the designation "iPhone1,1". This was then replaced by the new iPhone 3G, also known as "iPhone1,2". The new product's GPS and 3G chipset features warranted an increment in the model number.

However, aside from the hinted designation, little else is known about the rumored iPod touch successor. No worries, though. We'll be keeping a close eye on any new updates we get regarding this. Make sure to drop by again just in case we get wind of any new information on the supposedly new model.
