iTunes - Image 1Mac Rumors sniffed out an interesting tidbit about the required online application for Apple's iPhone, which is iTunes 7.3. Apparently, there is a new function aptly called the "Make into Ringtone" feature.

This supposed ringtone-converter application in iTunes will allow users to choose any song available in the iTunes store, and will enable them to capture up to 30 seconds of the track to convert it into a ringtone. The cost of the service is reportedly US .99 cents.

Knowing that the option to use MP3s in the iPhone is non-existent, Apple may rub its iPhone customers the wrong way should this turn out to be true. Most smartphones available in the market can set MP3s as ringtones, free of charge. If Apple were to charge its customers for this generally free service, it may be another point off the iPhone.

This thing is such garbage, im not surprised about this.

Let's take features found on other phones and release them under Apple for all the drones...then we'll charge them exorbitant amounts of money for things that are free on the competition. Haha...foolish public.

Really, I didn't know you could download any song for free and set it as your ringtone with other smartphones. That's what this is talking about - buying new songs and converting to ringtones, not just converting old ones

Most smartphones - and regular JAVA based or otherwise - can set a .mp3 file as ringtone. Downloaded or not. Here's another list of iPhone shortcomings that most of the rest of the world can take for granted.

1. direct connection to a mobile online music sedrvice (iPhone can only sync with iTunes)
2. Video ringtones
3. LED light for camera or as with SonyEricsson K800 and K810 a real Xenon Flash
4. Record Video
5. 3G data or even HSDPA (Turbo-3G)
6. Mobile TV for real
7. GPS

And for the record - Motorola had an all touch-screen phone which played .mp3, had a camera, played video, memory stick and GPS in 2002 - the A1000 (http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/details.jsp?globalObjectId+40)

SonyEricsson release the W950 Walkman phone in October 2006 with 4GB flash memory, walkman music player, touch screen, and I can play DivX files in VGA resolution at 30fps on that phone - drag-n-drop from my computer.

So... iPhone - what's new?

Well, I do agree that not being able to play your MP3's as ringtones on the iPhone is very disappointing... However, we know the iPhone will be hacked to the bone and that functionality will be revealed.

Also, just the ringtone issue is not enough to degrade this device. Yea it cost $600.. but it is the best phone I have EVER had. I absolutely LOVE it.. There are so many features.. the Safari browser and touchscreen itself is worth its price. I'm a hardcore PC user and the way the iPhone OSX runs just amazes me.. Makes Windows Mobile on my Moto Q look like absolute filth.
