ZuneOkay, before we start, let me just clarify that I'm merely reporting my source's opinion on Zune and iPod, so that means this isn't my, or QJ's opinion on the said topic.

Having that said, let's go on RDM's take on Microsoft's latest gadget, the Zune. For those who aren't in the know, Zune is Microsoft's portable media player, slated for release tomorrow.

As such, it was touted as "iPod's latest killer." However, our source points out that it may not be the case. Why? Let's check out all three reasons.

First off, Apple's winter strategy was to lower the iPod's price, to make it a viable gift for the holidays. Our source reports that most users would consider the iPod as a luxury item for themselves, and because it's branded as such, consumers won't think of it as a feasible gift for the holidays. Apple seems to know that, so to cash in the holiday frenzy, the price of the iPod is slashed during its winter season so that consumers will see it as an affordable gift this Christmas, generating more income for Apple in the long run.

Second, our source points out that the Zune is rather heftier than the iPod, and it being bulky may become a problem, as it is a portable music device.

Lastly, RDM says that the Zune's radio transmitter and rather large screen drains the battery life faster, which may lead to customer complaints. After all, a portable device should have long battery hours, as it is always on the go (and stopping over some place just to charge it is such a hassle).

As said earlier, these are just our source's views on Zune. How about you, what do you think?

 » nope.

Battery life and portability are THE most important parts of a music player. If I want to listen to music I don't want a big screen. Microsoft is just biting themselves in the butt with this one. I just don't see it being a success.

This is a MULTIMEDIA player. it's not just music. if you just want an mp3 player for music. go buy a Zen Micro or one of the Sandisk players. because they dont use a color screen and have 15+ hours of battery life.

With that said. The Zune has 14 hours of music play with the wi-fi off and 13 hours with it on. And it has 3.5-4 hours of video play.

Now the ipod has 14 hours of music play (30 GB version) and 2.5 hours of video (30 GB Version) though i know most of my friends and most people who own the 30 GB ipod say that they rarely get over 2 hours of video play and usually under 12 hours of music.

The battery life on the Zune is fine. it's better than the ipod for video and the same as the ipod for music. And if you really want more time for watching movies/music, go buy a PSP and run everything off a memory stick. that'll give you around 8-10 hours. for video. probably 16 for music.

get an ipod. also, the picture on the zune is gonna look way worse than ipod's. the same amount of pixels stretched over more space, thats always good. how can you say its a multimedia player and then say to get a psp to play video (the psps battery is about 4 hours, not 8-10 as you suggest. plus the zune is ugly and made by the evil empire, i mean microsoft.

DRM, shared songs last 3 days or 3 plays, PAYING FOR MP3s ? ? ? ? ? WHY ? ? ? WHY do people pay for these crippleware tactics ? ? You honestly mean to tell me that doing a "@find" in an irc channel is more challenging then reading a Zune or Ipod manual, installing software, learning about DRM, inputing your Visa # and paying for mp3s 99 cents each ? ? ? ? ? ? I guess I overestimate your average consumer. And don't give me that morality crap about stealing music, I'll steal mp3s and hold the door for old ladies to make up for it.

@Macuser: i own a Zune, got mine today and i can personally say that the picture quality on the Zune is of higher quality than the Ipod, incredibly higher. and dont say a damn thing until you see it. secondly, it is a great digital media player, great for music, photos and video. i only said to get a PSP if your annoyed with the battery life (2 hours on ipod, 3.5 on zune). and idk about your source but on my PSP i get between 8-10 hours of video on it playing directly from a sony high-speed memory stick. And if your only point is that it's ugly well then piss off. cause you've already lost.

@badam: please explain? or better yet dont post since you aparently dont know anything.

@sdfsfd: i'll admit the 3 day/3 play thing is retarted. and i personally wont pay for anything via Zune Marketplace. and i've never paid for anything over itunes. And the Zune does support all unprotected mp3 and WMA files. i have 400 files on my Zune that i downloaded via P2P software. The Zune nor the iPod force you to pay for music. Do they want you to? of corse. but you dont have to. Most people just dont realise that they dont have to pay so they do. but those people are stupid and bought ipods in the first place lol. j/k.

Well I meant That it doesn't play mp3 from other sorces. Only music from the Zune website and have to buy a pack of points, like xbox live. Thats What I was realy trying to say.

@nightshade15: thanks man. And thats cool how everyone owns something. I personally have an iPod Nano as well as my Zune (and a PSP but i use that for gaming mostly now) and honestly i like the Zune better then both of 'em. though they all have their advantages.

@badam: not true. You do have the option to purchase music using 'Microsoft points' or using a Zune Pass (which is pretty much renting the music) but you can rip CD's into Zune and take your own mp3's from itunes (not protected ones) or any other unprotected mp3 or WMA file from any service to go on your Zune. i have over 500 songs on my Zune right now and not a single one is from the Zune Marketplace.

the zune supports:
-all unprotected mp3/WMA audio
-podcasts
-mp4 video
-wmv video
-jpg pictures.

so no matter what mp3 player you have as long as your music isn't protected the zune will play it. (it will not play bought itunes songs or playsforsure songs.)

Now I know something more, no one told me that unprotected music will work, I know the truth, but still I wont buy one too much for me and my ds is my music player

» zune wont be ipod killer

I dont think the ZUne has a chance of selling close to as much as ipod does. theres already so many people with ipods and ipods have more choices in colors, sizes, and things like that, and for the zune software you NEED a pc. unlike with iTunes where you can have it on a PC or mac. and because the zune is so new there could even be more problems with it but i dont really know about that.

» time to set some more things straight

@RC andrews: the Zune is a very good looking media player. WOW OMFG IT DOSN"T HAVE A SCROLL WHEEL. get over it. your not 2 years old you can learn to push a button. And fine video may be pointless to you, but not to around 30 milllion other people out there who want mobile video. and for them the Zune is the best choice out there with the largest size and largest quality screen (screen quality is 2 times the amount of pixels as the ipod video). And i'll admit my ipod nano is perfect for just music, nice and small, eazy to use. but for all around media use, the Zune kicks it's ass.

@hamburgler: only time will tell. a recent survey found that 58% of ipod owners were planning on going over to Zune. and in total 84% of ipod owners would leave their ipod to go to a better mp3 player. And as for the Zune software needing a PC. 95% of the people who own computers own a PC. it's the honest to god truth. get used to it, it's not gonna change. though i will admit they should of but the mac use in there just like apple did for the ipod and it may happen in the future. And being a Zune owner i'll admit i've found a few things i dont like about it, but with it's software being constantly updated for new features (video sharing, ect.) theres always a chance that they will fix things.

RIght now it's no ipod killer only selling under half a million so far, but it's the holiday season that will tell. I know in my store i've had a lot of people who were planning to buy ipods now buy the Zune. so we'll see.
