Apple: iTunes movie rentals won't work on 5th gen iPods - Image 1Reading Apple's first Q&A in the iTunes Movie Rentals FAQ should have been the end of it really, but as many customers have mused, why would a later generation iPod classic be deprived of an iTunes service? A complaint at Apple's support forums has many iPod owners puzzled, if not skeptic, at how a later model of Apple's iPod couldn't avail of a staple third generation iPod nano service, but some believe the service won't work due to hardware and DRM limitations.

Apple confused with laptop user needs and MacBook Air? - Image 1Let's get this straight first: The many desktops, laptops, phones, and portable media players from Apple may not grab a large share of their respective markets, but each one competes just as effectively as the segment's top-tiered gizmos. But some third-party onlookers would agree that Apple may have lost the market's direction after it introduced the MacBook Air. Why? Read on to find out.

V for Vendetta, Moore, Lloyd - Image 1We posted an article one month ago that invited readers to do a little thought exercise. Here's what we said: "On the 5th of November we're going to post an article or two about video games, gadgets, technology, and general geekness ... the things about video gaming and technology that ought not be forgotten."

So here's our list of some video gaming and technology moments worth remembering. Hope this gets you thinking (and feeling nostalgic too!). And we look forward to your comments (and arguments). What do you remember and wish that the world will never forget?

Top ten things buyers upgrading to Mac OS X Leopard should know - Image 1While surfing around on the web we found a very interesting article from Gizmodo.com detailing ten things that a buyer needs to know before switching to the Mac's Leopard OS. While we've been pouring over the feature list of Apple's new operating system (and every other new application that comes out) we realize that not everyone would actually enjoy doing that so we though we'd share this handy little guide to our readers.

The guide pointed out some important points such as Leopard will work on older machines and that the new operating system doesn't use much more RAM than Tiger OS. However, people who plan on upgrading should keep in mind that some of their applications may not be currently supported by Mac OS X Leopard, which means that you might want to check with the different developers to see if your current programs will work.

All in all, the Mac OS X Leopard is a pretty good operating system, and one that heavy Mac users should consider picking up. If you want to read the full guide, don't hesitate to click on out Read Link.

Apple Leopard - Image 1Computer solutions providers have reported that preorders for the Apple's Mac OS X Leopard have doubled, as compared to the release of the previous OS Tiger. The supposed culprit? Overall dissatisfication of the consumers over Windows Vista.

"More than anything, it has to do with the biggest growth coming from 'switchers' - people switching from the Windows platform," said Chirs Gore, a marketing director for Macforce, an Apple specialist.

The release of Apple Leopard was actually scheduled for last Spring, but was pushed back to this month to make way for the iPhone. Computer suppliers said that the delay didn't affect the expected sales of the Mac OS, however.

Other suppliers reported having a hard time ordering stocks of Leopard, while the rest of the solution providers are excited about the unveiling of Apple's newest OS, with some even giving out computer mice covered in leopard skin-prints.

Apple: Not bricking hacked iPhones, update at fault - Image 1There have been quite a few reports of bricked iPhones ever since the release of the software update from Apple. Contrary to what some may believe, it doesn't look like the company intentionally created software that would brick hacked iPhones.

One of the developers of the unlocking application, Erica Sadun, said that "it wasn't intentional at all. If they wanted to brick hacked iPhones, they could have done a much better job of it." She further supported her stand on this by pointing out that the update bricked both hacked and stock iPhones. The problem, she noted, was with the update itself.

The new software, which was a complete rewrite of the original code, was still unfinished according to Sadun. She added that there were many parts of the application which consisted of hacks geared towards just getting the application to work.

Despite the fact that the code looks rushed, Apple did make sure that the update was very secure with every function certified, encrypted, and requiring a checksum. Sadun commented on this saying that "Apple wants no one else on the platform. It's a pretty strong statement of that."

This release seems consistent with Apple's current stand on hacking the iPhone. Vice president of Apple's hardware and product marketing Greg Joswiak said that while they will not be designing software to intentionally break third party applications, they won't care if their regular software updates do break the unlicensed applications. Note however, that he did leave a disclaimer stating that the company is always re-evaluating its stand on topics like this.
