If you're still not satisfied with the amount of rhythm games out there for the Wii and you're just interested in a little freestyle jamming, then some students from the University of Potsdam in Germany have just the thing for you. Using a Wii controller and the Nunchuk attachment, they've created a program which simulates playing a drum set complete with an adjustable system included to it.

The program makes use of the Bluetooth wireless system to connect to the Mac and transmits the motions taken from the Wiimote into sound. It even uses the accelerometer to measure how hard you're beating your virtual drumsticks and reflects the loudness or harshness of the sound. In fact, if you take a look at the video below, you'll notice there's no delay with the hitting of the "drums" and the sound they make.

What's more is that the program itself is free! This open source creation is easily downloadable at their website at ScreenFashion and can easily be tweaked using customizable MIDI settings for those who want to experiment with their own creations. So until Nintendo decides to release their own drum simulator, you can access the site through the read link below for those interested in downloading this freestyle drumbeating rhythm simulator.

Telekinesis from jnjitkoff and gmurphy - Image 1We shared with you yesterday an article concerning Blizzard's World of Warcraft being playable and Apple's iPhone. It was about a hack that allows users to run the MMO on the mobile phone, albeit with limited features. Some of you said it's fake while the others found it amazing, to say the least.

We briefly mentioned in that same article the third-party program iPhone Remote (aka Telekinesis) that made the trick possible. To settle this once and for all, let us discuss further what the said application is. Telekinesis was created by a team of coders headed by jnjitkoff and gmurphy. Other members include ksmarshall, bwhitman, and dmaclach.

In a nutshell, this application allows users to remotely access their Mac through a collection of mini web applications on iPhone. The good thing about Telekinesis, though, is that it sports a wide range of other remarkable features. Some of which include:
  • Stream music and videos from your computer learn how
  • Screen capture with mouse click and basic typing support
  • Simple iTunes Remote control
  • Browse your files
  • Run applescript remotely
  • iSight image capture
  • Easily create and add more apps
Take note that this build, v0.9.16 Alpha, is just a developer prototype and is intended as a demo to introduce the program to the public. And as such, there are certain security considerations that you have to keep in mind should you intend to use it. The following were provided by the developers themselves.
  • It will have the same access privileges as your user account
  • The login and password you specify will be stored on disk, so should be different, but as strong as your account password.
  • Don't leave it running if you aren't using it
The download package below doesn't not contain a Readme file so you may want to refer first to our Source link before using this on your Mac and iPhone.

iPhone Developers Camp - Image 1Apple's iPhone won't be released before June 29 but certain individuals are already planning to develop web-based applications and optimize web sites for it. In fact, an event is being planned by BarCamp from July 6 to 8 in the Bay Area (that's in California) just for that purpose.

If you are not familiar with BarCamp, it is actually an ad-hoc gathering for people to share and learn in an open environment. So, attendees of this so-called iPhone Developers Camp will include web designers, developers, testers, and iPhone owners. The major objectives of the said event will involve:
  • Create new web applications for iPhone.
  • Optimize existing web applications for iPhone.
  • Migrate Dashboard Widgets to web-based widgets for iPhone.
  • Test and optimize web sites for iPhone.
If you are planning to attend, please take note that this is a "working camp". That means that being an iPhone owner is not enough to get into the developers camp. While it is free, you should be able to build and launch web-based applications and sites for the new mobile phone.

Our Read link will take you to BarCamp's official page for the iPhone Developers Camp. It will provide you with more details regarding lodging, things to bring, status of the project, and a couple of presentations. Also, please take note that this event is in no way related to Apple.

COO of Mozilla speaks about Steve Job's view of the Web - Image 1

"We've never ever at Mozilla said that we care about Firefox market share at the expense of our more important goal: to keep the web open and a public resource. The web belongs to people, not companies." These were the words of Mozilla's COO John Lilly in a recent blog post of his. What prompted this statement though, is the real story.

For those who have been keeping up with the WWDC, Steve Jobs delivered his keynote speech and unveiled Safari for Windows. Now, this is a big thing because the Apple iPhone will be running web applications, and this is the manner that it will be interfacing with the PC. The simple fact that PC users will be getting another browser option for their systems is really great. So what's the problem?

Steve Jobs presented the way he wanted the market to look eventually and it showed a view that's, as Lilly put it, "out-of-date, corporate-controlled, duopoly-oriented, not-the-web thinking." A duopoly (a market controlled by two organizations) cuts out everyone else and leaves everyone at the mercy of the companies running it. Everyone saw the ruckus that was caused with the Microsoft anti-trust issue, adding in another big company to control the rest of the market may not be in the public's interest.

Lilly may have a point with this although there is no arguing Apple's success. It may precisely be that outlook that's driving them to the top. Still, we have to consider the consequences of a possible duopoly on the net and how it will affect the internet community as a whole. If you want to read the entire blog post, be sure to click on our read link. Keep checking back here for more updates on this issue.

Camino 1.5 - Image 1After fifteen months, the Camino Project has finally unveiled Camino 1.5. This is the latest and most substantial update to their Camino 1.0 web browser.

Some of the new features in Camino 1.5 include a built-in Mac OS X Spellchecker that works on every text field and added support for session saving. With the latter, Camino can now automatically load whatever websites you were visiting when you quit or when you suffer a crash.

RSS feed detection has also been added to the Camino browser. In Camino 1.5, an icon will appear on the location bar when a feed is found. Clicking on that icon and selecting a feed will send the selected feed straight to the user's default feed reader. Tabbed browsing has also been improved with new tooltips and navigation features.

Camino 1.5 runs on Mozilla's popular Gecko 1.8.1 rendering engine, the same engine used by Firefox 2. The browser is available as is a universal binary and runs natively on both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs.

Open Office - Image 1

Heads up, Mac open source fans. The Open Office organization is looking to add more free gear to your software library with the port of the free Open Office made popular on the Windows platform. An alpha test version is currently out and is usable but the array of features you can actually access is very limited.

For instance, the print command isn't available, PDF export does not properly work as the text won't show on the page right and copy+paste still doesn't fully work among others.

Still, the core of the apps are running as smoothly as you'd expect from an alpha version. To get the full list of known bugs and information on how to download the suite, follow the read URL.

Adium X looks nice. - Image 1

Mac OS X users now have a new way of getting their gossip (or actual important stuff) across the world in a blink. Adium X is finally out of beta and celebrates its first release with its wonderful green duck and a whole lot of changes.

As Trac Software notes on Adium's about page,

Adium is a free instant messaging application for Mac OS X, released under the GNU GPL and developed by the Adium team. With Adium, you can connect to any number of messaging accounts on any combination of supported messaging services and then chat with other people using those services.

There are a ton of changes to the program, but Trac Software lists some major tweaks:
  • Added global user profile and buddy icon settings. (Personal Preferences)
  • General Account improvements. Accounts can now be disabled when not in in use, and friends can now sign on from your Adium without saving their information.
  • Added an Xtras manager for better browsing and removing of Xtras.
  • Major improvements in privacy settings.
  • Improvements to the default look and feel of Adium.
  • iTunes integration is much faster, and updates as soon as the song changes.
  • Redesigned Chat Transcript (Log) Viewer
  • Optional dock-like hiding of the contact list
  • Requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later (Universal Binary)
You'll definitely want to read through their changelog before you do anything as it's definitely a very long list of changes. They also have video tutorials for installing and using the program, and that's one thing you definitely can like about them: they've got a personal touch.

Introducing Correo - Image 1 Introducing Correo - Image 2

Thanks to the Hawk Wings blog, we found out about a new email client OS X users can try out. It's called Correo and, according to its creator Nick Kreeger, it "blends technology from two popular Mozilla projects, Camino and Thunderbird, to create a polished native Macintosh application."

Correo's currently pretty basic, but it does give offer some viewing options, from a "mail.app" styled layout to an Outlook-like version, as you can see from the above pictures. The application also supports multiple POP and IMAP accounts, so a family of Mac users can pick this up just as easily for their own personal use.

Kreeger mentions adding more functions in the future, from a plugin capability to let people make their own customizable program extensions, to address book support, one feature almost every full-fledged mail program has these days, even if you don't actually use it. The source link has more information on the application, along with the program's source code and its own wiki. Give it a try and see if it fits your tastes.

Features:
  • Create multiple mail accounts (POP and IMAP)
  • Reply, Forward, and write new messages (via SMTP)
  • Ability to setup interface for 2 column split view or 3 column view

The betaIt's a couple of days late, but we think it can still afford to be labeled important news. Now up for beta testing is the Gentoo PPC64 PS3 LiveCD, which will enable you to use a GNOME desktop environment on both the PS3 and the G5 Apple PowerMac.

If you don't know what GNOME is, it's a kind of open-source desktop environment that people have updated with open source versions of the software normally found in other operating systems. In other words, it's an alternative desktop choice that also has a big, supportive fanbase for newbie questions.

In addition to GNOME, the LiveCD also has Audacious, Evolution, Firefox 2-X (Bon Echo), Gaim, Gimp-2, and Xchat software included, which make it a pretty hefty package. You can find more information on the ins and outs of this new development at the source, and feel free to check the additional link for download mirrors. Just look for the "experimental/ppc64/livecd" directory in your respective mirror sites. Enjoy!
