A flying lemur - Image 1It seems that man has harbored a desire to defy gravity ever since. Though the Wright Brothers were interested in designing and flying the first successful airplane, scientists these days are studying the principles behind the lemur's ability to fly, and they may have pinned it down, thanks to some Wii and iPod-related technology. More on this flighty topic after the jump.

The Black iPhone - Image 1 You can't put a price on individuality and sometimes people go to lengths to say "I'm different." Well when Mark Hoekstra of GEEKtechnique decided to paint his iPhone black, that's what he was going for. He wanted to say "this is my iPhone." Plus there was a crack he had to cover up.

So a friend's iPod cracks and it lands on Hoekstra's lap, but now it has this ugly crack near the home button. What does he do? He takes an old Apple keyboard, pries out the old Apple logo (the rainbow-colored one) and cuts out some plastic. He then molds the plastic to fit over the bottom of the iPod to cover up the crack.

After all that trouble of modeling the plastic he decides to go a step further and disassembles the whole device to spraypaint the external casing black. When he puts the whole thing together he wound up with a pretty sleek iPhone that, in it's own respect, is better-looking than the original with a touch of old-school charm.

Visit the site through the Read link below to see the steps he took to mod his iPhone with his own personal touch.

Undercover reporter investigates Apple's retail front lines - Image 1An undercover reported investigated Apple's retail stores, and what did he find? Every little detail that Apple Store customers have experienced for the first time, too, it seems. As a matter of fact, Alex Frankel, the reporter who has spent two years undercover as trainee for the front line retail of several companies, has described the same sense of passion and will to share information that you may have felt from your previous encounters with Apple Store sales personnel.

According to Frankel, it was apparent that from day one, Apple was serious about selecting Apple-inclined employees (if not already huge fans) to man its retail stores nationwide. "Apple is surely a rare bird--few companies have such a broad and committed following, let alone frontline employees who revere its CEO," wrote Frankel.

With that said, Apple's sales process was all about customer approach, though most of the time, Frankel found that they didn't seem to be working hard in selling. "At an Apple Store, workers don't seem to be selling (or working) too hard, just hanging out and dispensing information," he added.

There's actually a three-step process involved, and it required understanding the customers needs (position), getting permission to ask finer details of the customers needs (permission), and continuing to dive into the available products and what satisfied the customer best (probe). And it actually sells. A lot.

Frankel further explained:

And that moves a ridiculous amount of goods: Apple employees help sell $4,000 worth of product per square foot per month. When employees become sharers of information, instead of sellers of products, customers respond.

He also added that the orientation treatment regarded them as responsible adults and didn't begin with programs that belittled first-time employees.

It was reported earlier that New York Times recommended Apple's way of sales for Sony's own retail outlets.

Al Gore - Image 1Have you visited the Apple website lately? If you haven't, you should go check it out especially if you're concerned about climate change and politics. Apple put on a message - loud and proud - congratulating the former U.S. Vice-President for winning the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Gore is regarded by some as one of the geniuses of our time, becoming one of the biggest voices in the fight against global warming. Aside from the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize, Gore won an Academy Award for his documentary on climate change "An Inconvenient Truth."

The message in the official Apple site reads:

Al has put his heart and soul, and much of his life during the past several years on alerting and educating us all on the climate change crisis. We are bursting with pride for Al for this historic recognition for his global contributions.

World of Warcraft - Image 1 Just in case you're having the same problem as Paynegwynn, whose WoW won't run its video recording feature properly on his Mac for some reason, then here's an explanation.

It turns out that there's some conflict between the video recording feature and a GPU bug. The folks at Blizzard have noted this already and it turns out that they've actually already disabled the option to record videos. Here is Blizz poster Tigerclaw's full explanation:

At present there is a bug in the driver software for that GPU which inhibits our video recording feature (in fact can lead to a crash) - so we disabled it for now on that hardware. However, once an updated driver is released for that machine which addresses that issue, we can post instructions on how to re-enable video recording on that configuration. It's not ideal but this is the best we can do given the bug that we ran into.

Though the solution implemented (meaning the disabling of the recording function) is rather off-putting, it really is the best thing they could do, given that the problem is hardware-based.

12 year olds caught stealing Wii - Image 1Three kids were caught stealing from a home in Needham. Two of them were 12-year-olds, one being a boy and the other a girl. Among the things they attempted to steal were a Wii console, an iPod docking station, and a cell phone. Unlike the young boys who managed to get away with stealing video games with a sledgehammer, the kids were caught not long after the incident.

The girl was caught by a resident of the house. One of the boys was caught by the Boston Police in an alley while the other one was found two hours later. The oldest, a 15-year-old boy, will be held in a juvenile detention facility while the other two were released into the custody of their parents.

The kids, who will appear at court September 4 at midday, are facing anything from community service to detention in a juvenile facility until they're 18.
