More interesting tidbits have come to light regarding the rumored US$ 1500 sub-notebook from Apple that's supposedly due at Macworld 2008. Apparently, MacRumors has heard "reliable confirmation" about the new sub-notebook.Let's start with what's not included: an optical drive. MacRumors suggests that instead of an internal optical drive, Apple will be offering an external optical drive for the notebook, presumably due to the company's efforts to reduce the size of its laptops. MacRumors also says that Apple is rumored to be introducing more than one notebook revision at Macworld, with at least one model packing a multi-touch trackpad. No more details about these supposed other revisions have surfaced yet. Of course, these all remain unconfirmed rumors at this point. Mac fans don't have long to wait until everything's made clear, though. This year's Macworld starts January 15. |

What' they want $1500 bucks for a computer without a DVD ROM? Man this company is expensive, but there products surely beat Microsteal's.

» Screw that
Unless they are giving away a free HD-DVD/Blu-Ray reader/writer with it, there's no way I'd buy a 1500 dollar laptop without an optical drive included. What's the point? So I could listen to music or surf the Internet, which is almost all that thing can do without access to an optical drive from which to install all my programs or games? No thanks, I already bought their iPod Touch, which is all I need for music and Internet on the go.

» Have to agree!
I really don't understand the hype everyone has about the ultra-portable platform. A laptop without an optical drive is like having an iPod without a USB port.
Sure you can have your external portable hard drive to load up all the crap you need, but ultimately, you are reduced to downloading everyone off the web. If I am out and about and want to buy a DVD or a Music CD, I have to wait until I get home to rip it onto my hard drive.
At one point we thought paper would go away once we had scanners and hard drives, but that is not the case... paper has its place as does an optical drive, and frankly, unless the hard drive in this laptop is a terabyte in size, I would NOT give up my optical drive as I am not about to waste all of the space ripping my DVD collection.
