Jaxxd has put togeather a tutorial on how to make a iPod charging unit out of just a few common items. Here was his plan:

lots of people i know have iPods, and sometimes theirs are discharged, I would love to help them out, but because of the limit of 1 jack on my old one... a single 9V and a single jack, i couldn't

original plan: 3 9Vs powering 1 iPod... plan after the smart thinking that most of my power would just be generating heat when it was resisted...

new plan: 2 9Vs, 2 Firewire jacks.

here we go!

Parts Needed:

DSC01741

  • (2)9 volt batteries (most expensive item) ~$10
  • Altoids Mint tin(which ever flavor you like the most) <$5
  • 9V snap connectors <$3 @radioshack
  • Firewire jacks $1.93/each without shipping, shipping depends, you can use something like USPS lowend or something... ~$10 or less.
  • File or Nibblers, I had a file, and the altoids tin is soft enough to cut through with just a file.
  • Soldering Iron(not pictured) - I used a Coleman Cold heat soldering iron... but you can use any... most people will have one, but one costs less than 30 at radioshack.
  • Hot glue (not pictured) - again, most people will have this, if you dont, u can just warm it up with a flame(lighter)

For those of you who might not be aware, Linux has been made available for installation on the iPod. Using Linux on your iPod allows for a vast number of expandability and customization, while still allowing the iPod to be used as it was intended. If you are running Linux on your iPod, there are tons of games, emulators, and applications that you can run on your iPod.

The project is currently focused at porting the uClinux kernel to the iPod, but also includes a GUI version named Podzilla. If you are not sure if iPod Linux is for you, you can check out the FAQ table at iPodLinux.org. Here is a quick quote from iPodLinux.org on the current compatability of their project.

Our bootloader allows for you to choose between either iPodLinux or Apple's firmware each time you turn on your iPod. iPodLinux is currently safe to install on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation iPods. We are currently accepting Donations towards the purchase of a fourth generation iPod for us to test with. The fourth generation click wheel, mini, U2, Photo, and Shuffle iPods are NOT currently supported. For the latest information on 4th gen development, read the Fourth Generation Project Status.

Are you ready to give it a try? Head on over to our Installation section. We currently have user-friendly installers/uninstallers for both Mac OSX and Windows. If you're lucky enough to be running Linux, you will find our Documentation full of invaluable resources for experimenting with your iPod.
