Michael Pachter - Image 1The Apple iPhone has gotten a lot of support from various video game publishers such as Electronic Arts, Sega, Namco Bandai and more. From all indications, the unit looks to have a bright future as a gaming platform. However, not everyone shares this view.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter spoke about the iPhone's prospect as a gaming platform. While he described the unit as "impressive" and said that it has "virtually unlimited potential" he expressed doubts about it taking off as a gaming platform:

I don't see it as a viable gaming platform, due to the cost of owning one. The iPhone costs $400 plus an AT&T wireless subscription for voice and data, IĀ?m guessing this is $80 a month, so the addressable market doesn't really fit the core gamer demographic.

Pachter justified his statements by saying that the current demography of the iPhone would probably be only interested in simple games. He added that the market for these "rudimentary games" would be small:

To the extent that hip, rich people are an interesting gaming audience, iPhone games will work. My guess is that this group is only interested in the most rudimentary games, and that the market will be small.

While Pachter gave out some valid points, it might be a bit too early to make predictions such as this. We'll probably see if his predictions hold true once games such as Spore (also available on PC, Nintendo DS, Wii, Mac, and Mobile) comes out on the iPhone.
