iPod Touch - Image 1When you thought you have everything on your iPod Touch, Apple is releasing a major software update that will add more features to your nifty gadget. New mobile applications, namely Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather and Notes along with Web Clips and the ability to watch iTunes Movie Rentals will be available for download from iTunes with a US$ 19.99 price tag. The software upgrade will also be integrated in subsequent productions of the iPod Touch.

Mail is an e-mail client that supports popular POP or IMAP-based mail services including Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, and .Mac Mail. The app can display photos and graphics together with the mail itself.

If you're near Wi-Fi base stations, Maps can do a lot like telling you your current location, provide directions, give real-time traffic reports, and view maps via satellite. Stocks and Weather, on the other hand, do what one would expect - keep users updated with live stock and weather reports. Notes allows users to, well, take notes.

Web Clips is for customizable home screens that you can pimp out with personal icons and switching between nine screens. It also tracks the websites you frequently visit. Last but not the least, the upgrade also gives iPod Touch users a chance to access iTunes Movie Rentals and rent movies to watch on the "gorgeous 3.5 inch screen."

Keep in mind that iTunes Movie Rentals is only available in the US. Aside from that, current iPod Touch users can immediately download the upgrade for US$ 19.99. Those who'll acquire the gadget in the future will have the upgrade installed.

 » hmm...

20 dollars for an update? it's a cool update and all... but... almost all that I can do it in the jailbreak... if they want to stop the jailbreak, they need to stop charging us for the update... because they patch the exploit in this firmware and nobody will update then...

 » Not great news

Especially since existing owners have to pay, where new owners will get it free - hardly inspires me to support Apple when it launches a product. It's things like this that make people look for alternatives.

Having installed the update (not bothered about Jailbreak if I'm honest) it does what it does very well, but it's not as if these products were developed specifically for the Touch - it's just the iPhone software in a download... So nice, but a bit miffed at having to pay for stuff that cost nothing extra to develop.
