MacBook Air May Support Additional USB Connections Via Hack - Image 1The MacBook may be the sexiest thing to happen to notebook computers, but it does have its drawbacks to have achieved that level.

First of all, benchmark tests have shown that the Air is generally slower than the MacBook and the MacBook Pro. Also, the Air only has one USB port.

However, it seems that a guy named Rowan Pope found a way to jack that amount up to three USB ports. However, the catch is that you have to break open your Air and mess with the hardware. Well, you have to crack a few eggs to make, uh, two USB ports.

Now, we do not recommend you do this with your own MacBook Air. Put down the screwdriver unless you're absolutely sure you want to risk your poor notebook which did nothing wrong except to have one USB port.

Okay, in a nutshell, Pope found that the Air has seven USB connections, and only some are being used. He also popped open his Air to find five low-speed controllers and two high-speed ones. Armed with this knowledge, he set on to find which pins are the USB connectors.

After some trial and error, he was finally able to identify which pins are which. He found three in all. He even found an unused SATA controller in his exploits. In the end, he gives this warning for those who wants to attempt the experiment:

YouÂ?ll have to find your own ground and +5v power supply. Be aware that there is no over-load protection for that +5v power -- that regulator is an additional part that isnÂ?t included in the ICH-8.

Follow the link below for a detailed report of his experiment.
