The US$ 1,500 Tesla computing powerhouse might not be a PC-only affair after all - not with the news we've just heard. It looks like NVIDIA is gearing up to compete in the Apple segment of the personal computing market, and their latest offering includes the next-generation of GPUs: the general purpose graphics processing units or GPGPUs for short. More on that at the full story. |

Apple is once again waiting for the go signal from Intel before announcing another update for its Mac Pro workstations. The revamped Mac Pro will use Intel's new Penryn processor and will be the first architectural overhaul to the Mac Pro line since Apple announced the Intel-based Power Mac last year. According to AppleInsider, Apple's contribution on hardware manufacturing is essentially complete. The Cupertino-based company is merely waiting on when Intel can deliver enough of its new 45-nanometer CPUs, specifically the Hi-k Xeons. The new Mac Pro line will feature two quad-core "Harpertown" Intel processors with front-side bus speeds of 1.6 GHz and 12MB of L2 cache. The new 45-nm Xeons, which feature clock speeds of up to 3.2GHz, will reportedly arrive starting mid-November. |

The Apple community's been waiting for this. It's been rumored that an eight-core Mac Pro is in the works, now it's a rumor no more. The Apple 8-core Mac Pro is finally here. Back when the 8-core Mac Pro was still a rumor, it was said that it was going to be released later this year, possibly November. It was released earlier than everyone expected. This newly launched Mac Pro is the world's first 3.0 GHz, 8-core Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro. We can't help but get swayed by the tagline on the Apple site: "Consider the bar officially raised." Mac Pro 8-core boasts advanced performance on workstation graphics, and "unparalleled" expansion in many possible configurations. Simply put, at 3.0 GHz the quad-core Mac Pro runs two times faster than Power Mac G5 Quad. Expansion-wise, it 8-core Mac Pro can accommodate up to four drives and 3TB of storage, eight DIMM slots to fill up with 16 GB of RAM, two Super Drives. That's a lot of power. We are sure the programmers and software developers are going to be happy with the functions of this one. |

We're truly not sure what to make of this rumor. Hey, if you've seen it yourself, maybe you should go ahead and tell us. But our source says that recently, a UK Apple store came out with an ad for a Mac Pro Â?Now quad-core or 8-core processing power. Configure yours todayÂ?. By the way, we came up with a story of the possibility of an 8-core Mac Pro last year. The source even has a screenshot. Although we can't really confirm if this could actually be true, if an 8-core processor is really going to be released (and advertised at retailer sites at that), the lesson of the story is that it's nice to dream. Apple allegedly removed the ad quickly from the website. We're left wondering why it ever happened in the first place... |

Apple displays and redesigns for the Intel Mac Pro are just a couple of the hot Apple-related rumors on the Arpanet, uh, I mean internet today. Let's take a look at the Mac Pros first.LoopRumors reports that the Cupertino-based company is planning to redesign the Intel Mac Pro - which suffered a slowdown since Adobe's Creative Suite 3 is not available as a universal binary - both internally and externally. The new machine is said to be "smaller, and 'significantly faster' than the current offerings" and will feature a cooling system that will "direct hot air through vents at the top of the machine, much like Apple's Cube of yesteryear." A lot of Apple fans have scoffed at this last feature though. If you may recall, a lot of people messed up their Cubes by putting stuff on top of them, causing the Cubes to overheat. New Apple displays, which have been talked about for quite some time now, are also reportedly being prepped for production. Says LoopRumors, the new displays are expected to in sizes of up to 50 inches (!!!). The new displays are said be even thinner, with a "lighter design" and "more mobility." No idea how Apple's going to squeeze mobility out of a 50-incher, but we're very interested to see what happens. |

The world (well, except Japan) flocks to Apple's doorstep for the iPhone, but don't think that (and the iTV - well, Apple TV now) would be the whole world for MacWorld. You might have just overlooked something just as interesting (sexy, even). Remember all those rumors and wild dreams about an Apple UMPC/UMMac? Well, it's still a no-show in MacWorld 2007, but Axiotron, Inc., with Other World Computing, provides the closest thing possible. Meet the ModBook: their take on a Tablet Mac. "The first ever Mac OS X tablet computer solution" literally is the guts of a Core 2 Duo MacBook in the shell of a UMPC, explains AppleInsider. It will cost the buyer around US$ 2,279 to transplant the essence of a MacBook into a 13.3 inch Wacom pen-enabled widescreen and chrome-plated magnesium top shell. The ModBook retains all the functionality of its donor, up to and including the CD/DVD combo drive and the iSight camera. The ModBook also comes with an optional built-in GPS system. It drew such a huge crowd - for a non-Apple booth - and it was awarded "Best in Show". Until January 31, Other Word is offering a special introductory price of US$ 2,199 for the ModBook - optional GPS included. Slated for an April release. Pictures of the demo pre-production unit below from AppleInsider. Come on. You know you want it. Please tap your pens on the Full Article link for more pictures of the ModBook. |
