It seems like id Software co-founder John Carmack has been keeping a close eye on Apple's recent announcement of its new SDK package. In his reply posted on a thread on the Slashdot website, he admitted the potential of the new software and the numerous applications that can be produced from it.To give you an idea of what the veritable FPS god said regarding the newly released SDK, here's a quote from the Slashdot website: We (Id) have put in our application like everyone else, so I don't have any inside information at this point. [...] Just based on the blurbs, it looks very good - a simulator plus debugging on the native device is the best of both worlds, and a 70% royalty deal for apps over iTunes is quite good. He admitted that the iTunes distribution channel was going to be a big thing in terms of developer and customer interaction, as well as the huge market opportunities it can bring home for the industry. However, he also speculated that it might take a while before regular people can react to this sort of change. While we're sure many were expecting a bold announcement of a new Doom-like FPS for the mobile phones, this might be a small beginning for other serious game developers to get their feet wet in this new medium introduced by Apple. |
