John Carmack, id Software co-founder and technical director, was unveiled as a surprise guest during Apple CEO Steve Jobs' keynote at this year's Worldwide Developers' Conference. While that may not be big news in and of itself to most readers, what Carmack brought to the keynote is.
According to Engadget, Carmack gave audiences at WWDC07 a first look at Tech 5, id Software's new game engine. Details about the engine are still scarce, but Carmack did give audiences a peek at some of the features that come packed with Tech 5. What we've got here is the entire world with unique textures, 20GB of textures covering this track. They can go in and look at the world and, say, change the color of the mountaintop, or carve their name into the rock. They can change as much as they want on surfaces with no impact on the game. More details about Tech 5 are expected to surface come E3. Carmack also noted that the engine was being geared towards the Mac, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 gaming platforms. Yes, the Mac. Carmack also revealed that another announcement involving the Mac would be made at E3. |

» More screenshots, maybe?
I dunno bout every1 else, but to me it looks just like a not-so-dark DOOM3 engine update...
From these screenshots it doesn't look as good as Crysis... maybe because they're limiting it's performance by going to Mac and/or older OpenGL version?

» hmmm ... looks familiar
That 2nd screenshot sure looks suspiciously like a snapshot from Motorstorm! --Did anyone else see the resemblance? All I can say is that, sure it looks like a right fine engine right now. But, how much will be stripped out of it by the time Carmack's ready to build a game with it. Look back at most of iD's recent stuff, starting with Quake 3... the early-stage engine always looked amazing. Then, when the time came closer to the actual iD game based on the new engine being released, the screenshots always began looking less and less dramatic. Tech 5? --Yawn.

» reason why the web sucks
this game needs a full 2500x1900 pic to realizes what is going on...Instead of this compressed bull ****...
I bet running on @ 1920x1200c60zh on a high end PC tec 5 would look incredible!!! most games cover up low rez textures.. But tec 5 won't half to.. Because everything can be high rez....
I wonder what kind of hardware they are developing for? (I bet the 8800& console)
