moneyOkay, let's get down to the nitty-gritty: Macs are not as outrageously expensive as other PC gear out there, it just seems that way. That's according to those zany analysts at Piper Jaffray, who said that the price of Macs nowadays are comparable to the price of PC-based laptops and desktops.

Gene Munster, who's made a name for himself recently by studying Apple and making some accurate forecasts, says that it's all in the consumers' perception that Apple's are more expensive computers. He said: "We believe both consumers and investors tend to believe that purchasing a Mac will cost 20 percent to 30 percent more than a PC," he said in a research note.

In case you want to look at the actual break-down and the cost comparisons, be sure to check out Cnet, which seems to counter the opinion on several levels. You can make the final determination for yourself. Of course, there isn't a PC out there that looks as sexy as some of Apple's latest products.

...Or a more opinionated blogger.
Name a task done on a Mac and it can be beaten in power and price by a PC.

I think it's mainly a matter of preference. If you like something with more style, you'll probably be willing to put your money into that aspect of it. If you have to have certain applications, or you want certain functionalities that aren't available on the Mac, you'll probably put your money into those. I don't think the price differential is that great anymore. However, I still wish the new Macs had gone with AMD instead of Intel.

Well I could build someting equivelent to a 1.6GHz Core Duo 512 ram 80GB HD mac mini for much less than i could get it at apple. The only thing it wouldnt have would be the remot and i could set that up with windows media center.

#3.Generally speaking you dont.

Reasons:
1. Hardware doesnt work, have to send it back. -5 days
2. If you arent computer savy windows will crash and spyware will take over. - 4 days (taking to get repaired)
3. Virus infection -4 days (taking to get repaired)
4. After a few years the power supply blows up - 4 days getting new one

So 17 days for building a PC

Macs:
Reasons
1. Hardware doesnt work send back -7 days
2. Virus infection -1 day

8 days for a mac.

Now the pricing (est. Aus)
PC:
Windows XP media Centre - $400
Motherboard with firewire, usb, wifi, bluetooth and core duo support $500
Graphics card (ATI raideon 256) $500
512 Ram $70
LCD Screen $500
Microsoft Office $300
Totals to
$2170

Macbook intel - $1600-$1700
Comes with
iLife
Mac OS X
AppleWorks
Few Games
Bluetooth, firewire, usb, wireless, Ethernet (1gb)
Easy scrolling mouse
13.3 Inch widescreen

Now compare the difference.

#2 there are reasons for why they didnt go with AMD
AMD dont offer low powered Processors yet
AMD processors are also prone to become a fire hazard if the Heatsink comes off on the processor.
Lots of other reasons

#1 I agree :)

Why are you comparing the cost of a custom-built windows box vs. a prebuilt macbook? You can buy a Dell laptop with dual core and windows media xp edition for under $950. Sure, it may be 1100-1200 to add a tv tuner and bluetooth support, but that is still 500 less than a macbook. Don't forget the macbook only has a 13.3 inch widescreen, while the Dell is going to have a 15.4 inch widescreen.

That's just pre-built...from Dell. You can scrape together a custom windows box for well under a 1000, trust me, I've done it for myself and my friends.

Don't use office, use Openoffice and you save $300 right away (Of course, MS office is not actually $300....).
