MacBook Air - Image 1The MacBook Air's ultra-thin profile was only made possible by certain changes to the conventional laptop designs of Apple. Among the changes made was the inclusion of  an integrated 37-watt-hour lithium polymer battery which caused some concern among the community.

According to Apple Insider, the replacement of these batteries isn't as complicated as some would believe. More information on this can be found in the full article.

The scratch caused by faulty read/write heads - Image 1Via Retrodata, we've learned of a particularly nasty flaw in Seagate Macbook drives that could essentially destroy the data on your computer.

Some faulty Seagate 2.5" hard drives from China have surfaced and, according to Retrodata, "the read/write heads appear to fail mechanically, quickly causing deep scratches to the platter surface, and rendering the drives practically unrecoverable."

Munster predicts next big iPhone update by 2008 - Image 1PiperJaffray analyst Greg Munster predicts that the iPhone may just be getting a new search feature, the styling of the Mac OS X's Spotlight function. The catch is that this may not be available until early next year.

That aside, Munster also made predictions for other Apple matters, such as the recent UK launch for the iPhone, and the new MacBook. Full details on Munster's predictions are available in the full article.

iMac lockups due to hardware failures and not software - Image 1Reports of new iMac lockups have been streaming within the Apple tech community lately, and speculations that the issue was software-based soon bloomed after Apple attempted to resolve the issues with a driver update. A recent report identified graphical artifacts as another symptom of the lockups and were reminiscent of defective or failing video graphics adapters.

This new find now mounts against collective speculations and points fingers at a totally different culprit - away from gripes at badly written drivers or Apple's Mac OS X Leopard. More at the full article.

Apple MacBok Pro is fastest laptop of 07 - Image 1Now, here's something you don't see everyday - one of the fastest rated laptops for this year by PC World is the Apple Macbook Pro 17"...running on a Windows Vista Premium OS.

The the test was undertaken using a combination of the WorldBench 6 Tests, at which the MacBook Pro rated an 88, and by running two-graphics intensive games: Far Cry, and Doom 3.

The Apple machine passed the Doom 3 test with flying colors, thanks in part to its new nVidia GeForce 8600M GT card, which also allowed it to play Far Cry at a staggering 141 frames per second. The video card is bolstered by a 2.4-GHz Core 2 Duo T7700 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive. This added up to a machine that the testers say was also light for its screen size - 6.6 pounds, although at the loss of a considerable bit of battery life - 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Power Mac G4 Leopard - Image 1One of the selling points of Apple's new Leopard is that it can work on older machines, and that Mac fans who are holding on to their legacy Power Macs can have a reason to rejoice once the Leopard OS gets released into the market. However, can Leopard really live up to its promise and run on an 8-year-old Power Mac G4 with AGP Graphics? Engadget tried to install the newest iteration of the OS X, and here's the verdict.

To cut the long story short, Leopard DOES work on an 8-year-old Power Mac, using only 5.9GB of space upon installation (that's without all the extraneous stuff such as drivers, etc). The question now is, what are the Leopard applications that work on an old machine, and what doesn't?

The new File Stacks and fans user interface worked, as well as Coverflow, Youtube, Quick Look, and Spaces and Expose. However, the machine choked on equally-important stuff such as DVD Player and Front Row.

All in all, it was a decent performance on a fairly old machine, and gives people reason not to throw out their legacy machines... at least, not yet.

Users report condensation, freezing problems with the new iMacs - Image 1Some iMac users have been complaining about problems on their new 24' iMacs, including the system locking up/freezing due to the ATI hardware installed on the systems and the appearance of condensation on the inside glass panel of the monitor.

The freezing issues due to the ATI hardware were explained on the mac4ever forums. One of the posters placed a call to Apple regarding his broken iMac, the technician dispatched to his house said that two kinds of graphic cards are being used inside the iMac assembly and that one of them has an inherent problem with the version 1.1 update.

Apple, already aware of the ATI hardware issue, has given an official statement on Macworld.com saying that they will be releasing a software update for this problem. Here's the exact statement from the Apple Spokesperson:

A small number of iMac users have made us aware that a recent software update issued by Apple can sometimes cause their iMacs to freeze, requiring them to restart their iMac. We are tracking down the root cause of this bug, and will issue a software update which corrects it as soon as we can Â? most likely later this month. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Unlike the previous problem, Apple has yet to release an official statement regarding the reported formation of condensation on the lower right side of the iMacs' monitor. Multiple users have complained about this and many theories have come up regarding what is causing the problem. One poster on the Apple forums said that the problem could probably stem from an inherent design flaw in the unit which has the fan for the optical drive directly behind that area of the iMac's monitor.

Hopefully, Apple comes out with a fix for both of these issues as many of those who bought the new iMacs are getting increasingly disgruntled.
