Safari icon - Image 1Barely a few hours after the beta release of the Safari browser for Windows, we've already picked up word of possible security issues. This appears to be the report being mentioned by David Maynor of Errata Security - the guy made famous for demonstrating how to "hack" a MacBook wirelessly. Here reads the consultant's description of the six detected bugs:

I'd like to note that we found a total of 6 bugs in an afternoon, 4 DoS and 2 remote code execution bugs. We have weaponized one of those to be reliable and its different that what Thor has found. I can't speak for anybody else but the bugs found in the beta copy of Safari on Windows work on the production copy on OSX as well (same code base for alot of stuff).

Given that it's a Beta releases, we'll be keeping our eyes peeled in case more developments are announced as Safari goes through its paces.

iPods - Image 1

Even though the iPods may be splashed with a wide variety of colors, sometimes you just want some more on your gadget. Well over at iPod Wizard, a poster by the name of omfgkm just might have found the solution to get some more style points in your iPod.

This time, you'll be bringing in color to your titlebar's font. He gave out instructions as to how to change your Menu Font color, specifically for 1-Bit fonts only. Then, he went on to discuss Font Resources, where they go, as well as its other functions. Now if you want to tweak with your iPod and add in a dash of color on your fonts, we suggest you just check out our Via link below.

But do take note that tweaking with your gadget is your responsibility alone. So don't go blaming poster omfgkm for sharing his find, nor should you go blaming us for giving you the word on where to get the tweaking instructions. Good luck, then!

Windows vista - Image 1Having Java active on a page that you don't quite trust can be pretty risky as the shadowy figures of the internet may be lurking in there and are waiting for the first chance to break into your Mac.

Of course, you can always deactivate your Java whenever you surf uncharted waters. However, the Java-related security vulnerabilities in Macs may very well be present in Windows as many users have the application QuickTime installed for playing digital media.

Apple's people say that the code in QuickTime just might have an opening that hackers and malware-makers can abuse. The bad news is that there's no quick fix for the weak spot and addressing the issue may take a whole reconfiguration of the program's structure.

The poster boy for this flaw is Dai Zovi's exploit which simply requires a user to open the web page and be probed. Tech sites have been crying foul, seeking immediate action from the software manufacturers to find a patch to the gaping hole before some serious harm is done to the user community.

MacBook Pro - Image 1While Mac owners can expect to enjoy enhanced computer security by way of a recently released security update for 25 OS X flaws, another new Mac owner is about to enjoy a new MacBook Pro laptop by hacking into it.

This is the case of software engineer Shane Macaulay, who has reportedly broken into one of two MacBook Pro computers set up at the CanSecWest conference's Hack a Mac contest. This successful hack attempt comes after a revamp of the contest rules last Friday, and after previous hack attempts had failed.

Macaulay has reportedly teamed up with security researcher Dino Davi Zovi for the attempt. "The vulnerability and the exploit are mine," said Zovi, regarding how the pair worked. "Shane is my man on the ground."

As for how they plan to split their bounty, Macaulay is expected top keep the MacBook Pro laptop, while Zovi is planning to submit the detected exploit to security company TippingPoint Technologies to apply for their Zero Day Initiative bug bounty program. "Shane can have the laptop, I want the money," Zovi said. That's the rough of what's happened at the event - the full technical details are available at the source link.

Apple TV - Image 1Engadget reports a couple of new abilities that you Apple TV owners can choose to bestow upon your two-week old Apple gadget.

The first one is an RSS plugin from Twenty08. This plugin features a basic RSS Feed reader and can read RSS1.x/2.x feeds. The plugin can't read ATOM feeds as of this posting, but we're looking forward to an update that will hopefully include this feature. Video RSS feeds are also on the way according to Twenty08.

The second is for videogame console emulation. It's not actually a hack per se, but according to Engadget, a Wiki over at AwkwardTV says that several popular emulators by Richard Bannister "work on the Apple TV OS with the addition of SSH." Right now, the following emulators have been confirmed working:
Finally, there's a challenge put forth by AppleTVHacks.net and FatWallet.com where they'll be giving US$ 1,000 to the first person or team who can get an Apple TV to use an external USB drive for storage. The patch must also be applied without opening the Apple TV's case, much like in the USB boot video we posted about a few days ago.

For more on all of these new hacks and the challenge, click on the "via" link below.

Linux on Apple TV? - Image 1 It looks like the Apple TV is going to feature Tux on its hood beside the pervasive Apple logo. Some ingenious hackers claim that they have wrought a custom Linux kernel on Apple TV's boot loader. The info is still incomplete but as it is, the kernel and the set-top box seem to have WiFi, SpeedStep and EFI. Other kernel status statistics:

  • EFI is not working fully
  • USB works with the "irqpoll" kernel commadnline option
  • nv Xorg driver works
  • nvidia's propritiary driver also works with full 3D accel
  • Speedstep seems to work. The CPU Clock gets down to 600 MHz
  • Wlan is working with ndiswrapper
  • Sound works fine
Just for fun, we'd like to quote to you the spoof Apple marketing campaign that appeared on the Linux users' site when Linux was hacked into a Mac Book.

The Intel chip... For months, it's been trapped inside a Mac, inside a pretty little box, dutifully performing pretty little tasks when it could have been doing so much more. Starting today, the Intel chip will be set free, and get to live life in a Mac... running Linux. Imagine the possibilities.

Mac OS X running on the Apple TV - Image 1

In the spirit of bringing you more Apple TV-related modifications, we're now gonna show you how to run the full Mac OS X on the Apple TV. semthex from Hackint0sh.org hacked out a replacement to the Mac OS X kernel, side-stepping over certain hardware restrictions that previously made running the Mac OS X on an Apple TV improbable.

Here are the steps to install the full Mac OS X on the Apple TV. Install at your own risk.

1) Remove the drive from the Apple TV
2) Back up your drive! Make an image of it (see the harddrive upgrade tutorial for this)
3) Connect the drive to a regular Mac (use a Firewire or USB drive dock)
4) Install OS X (Intel version) to the drive (we suggest a slim install - no printer drivers etc.)
5) Boot from this drive, and set it up as you would like it. Make sure you do updates so it is at least 10.4.8.
6) Reboot to your normal OS X install.
7) Remove mach_kernel from root of the drive containg the ATV install.
8) Replace it with the customised mach_kernel that youÂ?ll find on Hackint0sh.org.
9) Replace /System/Libary/Coreservices/boot.efiwith the same file from your backup of the Apple TV OS drive (OSBoot partition).
10) Run bless:

bless --folder=/Volumes/OSBoot/System/Library/CoreServices --file=/Volumes/OSBoot/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi --setBoot

11) Delete all the Nvidia kexts (all beginning with NVD, there should be 5) from the target drive (in /System/Library/Extensions).
12) Transfer the drive back to the Apple TV
13) Turn the Apple TV on and cross your fingers...

And you should boot up into Mac OS X. The Apple TV running Mac OS X can use the mouse and the keyboard normally. Use either Front Row or Back Row to watch content.

For a more detailed how-to, check the installation video by clicking on the full article link below.

Prometeus Pro

You Mac OS X aficionados really like Prometeus, didn't you? You guys were raving about it when we last brought it up. Well, there's a new version out that should be of interest to you guys.

Prometeus v0.9.7B2 is a demo version of the app that combines the PSOne game-playing capability and ISO compression function of the previous version with the ability to save ISO directly from EBOOT.PBP files. For the most part, we've placed the recent changes and features of the app below.

One thing you might like to know is that Dago^WATT and Prometeus are asking for donations from interested users. If you've noticed, we mentioned that Prometeus v0.9.7B2 is a demo. Their download page states that the Pro functions in this demo are only usable thrice, and you have to restart the app if you want to use it again. Giving them a modest donation, however, alleviates the problem.

Interested users of the app can opt to donate one dollar to them and they'll send you v0.9.8, which they call PrometeusPro. The update updates certain functions. As they mention on their blog, "GetISO function updated. You can decompress ISOs from PBP. Additional function: You can cut zeros from end of image file (0.9.8)." It's not exactly a very big revision, but it does help them in the long run. For now, we'll let you guys visit their site to try out the demo, and if you're liking the download, you can order it directly from them. Enjoy!

  • New PBP features:
    • Patch IDs: Name and Game ID number patch without extract EBOOT.PBP.
    • GetISO: You can save ISO from EBOOT.PBP
    • Delete Files: App delete all Unpacked files from the folder
  • Built in CDripper (from 0.9.5)
  • Create folder with Game Name, automatically copy there KEYS.BIN and EBOOT.PBP.
  • Allow different PNG sizes (but not allow bigger than max size) except BACKGROUND.PNG (it has fix size).
  • When you change Game ID Number or Game Name you don't have got to press Enter. (Just Press Start button)
  • Live preview
  • Unpack / pack PBP files.

Have you ever heard of the "Carputer"? Yep, that one where the Intel Mac Mini is installed in a Subaru? Not yet? Then read up, 'cos this post's about it.

That image posted below is actually the "final" product. Sam, over A GThing Science Project, has apparently been cooking up this project for quite some time now ( five blogs' worth, in fact). And at last, after ripping his car, frying not but a few parts and soldering a whole lot of stuff to make the product car-friendly, it's finally finished.

And it sure looks like a whole lot of hard work was put into it. So, if you want to check out exactly how this guy did it, and all the pains that he went through for it, you can check out the site over at the Read Link. We'd have to say, this "homemade project from scratch" sure gives a whole new meaning to the word "perseverance".

Let's see... What has the Wiimote been able to control so far? Remote-controlled cars, guitars, Sony's PlayStation 3, EverQuest II, and some other items. Yep, that's a lot of stuff.

Now, how about the king of MMOs?

Someone's decided to make a tutorial video for using your Wiimote to play World of Warcraft. As you can probably see from his interface, he's using DarwiinRemote to get the job done, so you'll have to remember to get that too. It isn't perfect though, as the there isn't a function for the right mouse button just yet, but this is a great first step.

In any case, what are we waiting for? If you have a Wii, an account for WoW, a Mac OS, and a few minutes to spare, you might as well learn how to do this little trick, right? All that's left is to figure out how to get my character to dance on-screen, and I'll be the hottest Night Elf dancing queen this side of Ironforge. Sweet!
