Aside from the previous announcement that O2 would be handling the iPhone's UK launch, there were other interesting bits that took place at the recent "Mum is no longer the word" conference over in London. For one, Apple has several iPhone units on display which carried its upcoming 1.1.1 firmware. Travis Bowers was curious enough to examine what new features this fw would carry over, and managed to find eight noted tweaks. Here reads his observations (via his blog):

  1. Apple iPhone firmware 1.1.1 details revealed - Image 1Now Playing controls throughout (even when locked).
  2. Double clicking home screen goes to "Favorites" or "iPod"
  3. iTunes Wifi Store. No surprise there. It's already running on the Touch.
  4. Additional iPod features: Closed captioning and support for video out.
  5. New Calculator icon on the home screen. Hmmm, okay.
  6. Multiple, international keyboards.
  7. Network setup for disabling EDGE while roaming. Goodbye $3,000 international roaming bills.
  8. Mysterious "Carrier" menu. My personal hope would be support for other carrier's SIMs internationally within the iPhone family. For example, I travel to England and can insert an O2 SIM.
Keep in mind that these are early observations, and might be subject to change. Stick around in case we pick up more info, or if Apple sends out official word on what the iPhone's fw 1.1.1 will carry.
