New Apple app folder iconsThink Apple's bog-standard OS X folder icons are boring?  This download's for you, then - a bunch of great-looking app folder icons.  It's freeware from Orhan Okay and is 1.5MB in size.

Download and enjoy!

QuicksilverIf you're not using Quicksilver, it's time to start.  (It's a 'launcher' with endless tricks up its sleeves, and once you start using it, you'll never be quite the same.)  For those already in the know, there's a great new plugin available that will be a welcome addition to Quicksilver.  (If you're also a flickr user, that is.)

FlickSilvr allows you to select files from anywhere on your system, tag them, and upload them to flickr all in a couple keystrokes.  No more middle-man (like iPhoto, flickr uploadr, or whatever you've been using).  It's available from Quicksilver Preferences Plugins, or from here.

Here's how to use it:
Select the image files you want to upload to flickr (one or many is ok)
Invoke QS
Load the selected files into QS (cmd g)
In the 2nd pane, use the new 'upload to flickr' action
In the 3rd pane, type a space separated list of tags you want applied to your photo(s)
Hit Enter
Done

This is a Mac-only app, so sorry Windows users.  Maybe it's time to switch...

Apple SafariI prefer Firefox for all the options it allows me to choose from - mainly plugins and search engine tweaks.  Then again, I hate Firefox for the processor hog it can easily become because of those plugins and search engine tweaks.  It's a cruel world.

But Safari's developer community is slowly but surely putting out some really nice enhancements for the Apple browser.  A couple to check out are Inquisitor and AcidSearch

Inquisitor is now a 2.5 release, and seems to be hitting a stride.  It gives Safari's search box a Spotlight-like feel in it's instant search results.  Pretty nice plugin with good execution.  About $6 to register.

AcidSearch breaks your search options into channels of information.  The intent being, to narrow down the buckets you're searching in.  I prefer narrowing it down myself on the backend of my query, to make sure I didn't miss anything, but that's just me.  AcidSearch will leave the money in your pocket, too.

WinampIf you use Winamp with your iPod through the winamp iPod plugin, you should probably hold off on updating your Winamp player.  This user talks about his unfortunate experience with the upgrade, which wreaked havoc on his iPod's playlists.  In the end, he lost about 18GB of music from his iPod.  Luckily he was smart enough to have backups, and the only thing that was really lost was time.  It appears there may be a fix, but no confirmation on that.  In the meantime, if you're a Winamp user, be cautious before upgrading if you use it with your iPod.

One of the thing that most bugs me about iTunes, and downloading video podcasts from the service, is that many content providers that are making use of the program are offering only 'low-res' versions of their material. Thinking that the video must fit the iPods' screen dimensions, most videos on iTunes are a paltry 320x240.

On a person weaned on HDTV resolutions, I just can't seem to enjoy watching videos on my computer when I've gotten them from iTunes. Technology Evangelist shows us that there is indeed a way to get higher resolutions on iTunes, so this is a personal call to all of you content providers to step up your efforts and provide at least an alternative download that supports higher resolutions for viewing at home. For those of you interested in how this works, make sure you check out their website at the link below.

According to the article: "While most content owners are creating content in full-res SD and some are even doing HD, most I have found in iTunes only offer a itty-bitty 320x240 video. There's really no need for that. With our feed options you can choose from MP3, AAC, Cell Phone video, PSP, Video iPod, 480p, 720p or 1080p."

Apple has started their Digital Video Distribution via iTunes. Currently many users use iTunes to manage their audio collection. Apple has now set their sights on offering digital video downloads via iTunes for iPod Video owners, but not without some complaints. It seems they started offering the movie High School Musical for download at the cool price of $1.99 then over time raised it to the 'regular' price of $9.99. While the movie is quite popular with many people, originally boasting 7.7 million viewers, the cost of the video for download is cause for another kind of enthusiasm.

While the download movie costs just about as much as the DVD msrp, the downloadable content offers much less, with the loss of video extras and special features that typically boost the price or sale of "limited edition" type movies. While the resolution is nothing to complain about in regards to viewing the movie on a video iPod, other users seem to think otherwise.

While the official DVD for High School Musical is due out later this year (extras and feature content included) Apple has yet to respond to user woes about their new digital video distribution service. In this reporters humble opinion, if they plan on taking on distribution on a massive scale, as evident, they need to sweet-talk their users before breaking their wallets with retail cost downloads. I for one will definitely always prefer tangible media to downloadable content as long as the price is in the same ballpark.

Windows XP on MacSo scarcely has the excitement worn-off that it is indeed possible to run Windows XP on an Intel Macintosh, and now the bootloader is available for the world to try.  The .zip file includes the bootloader to get your Windows XP install running on an Intel macintosh, as well as a lengthy how-to text file to walk you through it.

Haven't yet tried it myself, as I don't have an Intel mac (yet) so let us hear your success stories.  Now that this is out there, I think it's high time I made a trip to the local Apple store for my new macintosh computer...

BubbleShare Beta

BubbleShare enters a niche already populated by many others - web photo sharing.  But they come to the table with a cool trick up their sleeve: The ability to add voice notes to each image.  Even cooler, is as your slideshow of images plays, your voice notes play along with it.

If you're a Mac user, there's a Universal iPhoto Plugin for bulk uploads, and a Dashboard widget for viewing.  BubbleShare also offers a photocast feed (that's mac-talk for RSS feed of photographs) to capture in iPhoto if you so choose.

That's the big news on BubbleShare.  I'm not sure if they're just relying on the one-trick-pony thing, or if they'll be growing in the near future.  I think the next move they would be smart to make, would be the ability to download slideshows with voice-overs, into a Quicktime movie format.  That could be pretty useful for folks who find that sort of thing difficult using an app such as iMovie.

Looks like someone was hip to the full length movie of "High School Musical" (scored 7.5 out of 10 at IMDB) being added to iTunesiTunes for a $1.99. Even though the movie is 487MB small, (you have to consider DVD rips are several gigs in size, and even AVI compressed video files are normally a full 700MB+) it is the full deal running at 1hr 39 minutes.

Even though I haven't seen the iTunes version (well even the TV version either, not like I would want to) of this, I'm going to go out on a limb here, and bet that there is a decent amount of artifacting or at the least a fair amount of pixel smearing from all the compression.

Shortly after the discovery the listing the movie was no where to be found, then was listed back up at 9.99.

New York CITY?!

You read it right 9.99, throw me a frickin' bone here. No way I'll be paying 10 bucks for a junk compressed movie, that is highly unlikely to pass muster on a larger screen. For that reason (among others) P2P networks will continue to have a place in the movie viewers bookmarks.
